Reboot: Beginning My Juice Fast

First off I will share a little information with you guys and explain why I am doing this anyway. I have always been really fat basically. I love to eat things that are awful for me, and I was really lazy in the past, and when I got to college that didn't change much. Going to class, sitting on the computer, eating terrible/cheap food, and playing video games for 5 years. I graduated in the Fall of 2011 and got a "real job" in my hometown. Most of my friends were either still away at school or had found jobs in other towns so I was basically left there alone with nothing to do for entertainment. One day, February 1st 2013 to be exact, I decided to go to a gym. Why not? I worked 8-5 and had the whole evening after that which I normally spent watching TV, so I had no excuse to not be doing something productive. Not wanting to waste my efforts in the gym, I began to eat right. So from February to September of 2013 I worked out 3-5 times a week, and ate a fairly balanced diet, much better than the pizza and chicken and ice cream I had grown accustomed to in the years prior. The picture below shows the progress. February on the right, and September on the left, for a total of 100 pounds lost.

I started dating a girl in August and I got a new job. The new job was taking around 12 hours out of my day versus the old one, so I started skipping out on the gym. Then I started picking up meals at work and along the way out of convenience, slipping back into the bad habits. The girlfriend and I moved in together, and we got in the habit of going out for dinners often, and cooking poor meals when we decided to actually cook. I had long asked for a juicer for my birthday which was two weeks ago, and I got one. I felt like that was the perfect time to start a reboot, or a juice fast. This process is well documented in "Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead" by Joe Cross which I recommend everyone watch; it's on Netflix by the way. Long story short, the girlfriend watched that documentary with me and she wanted to give juicing a try as well. She isn't overweight at all, but it has many health benefits and she thought it would be encouraging for me if she participated as well.

Last night we went and rounded up our supplies for Day 1 and are going strong. In the documentary Joe fasts for 60 days. We are both starting with 5 and seeing how we feel and what results we get, and we may end up choosing to try a longer period in the future, but I believe we will at least shoot for ONE five day reboot per month, just because. In the last 9 months I have gained about 40 pounds back out of the 100 I had lost, so here's to taking a step in the right direction. I included some pics below for fun of our supplies and my juicer. If anyone has any questions or comments, post them and I will respond, and probably will come back to this blog to update you on the progress at the end of Day 5. Thanks for reading!

100 pounds is fantastic, and especially losing it in a healthy way. It's awesome that your girlfriend is supportive as well. I'm sure with all the motivation she is giving you and the motivation you have, you'll drop the 40 pounds you gained back plus more easy peasy!

Yeah I hope so. Plus this is a nice little new experiment, and I like a challenge, so we will see what happens!

I'm sure it will work out great. Some juice (tomato, celery, spinach) is so nasty though, so use lots of fruit to cover it up! I look forward to reading about your progress!

Good luck! Even more important than the willpower it'll take to do the fast is a constant commitment to eating well. Get back into those healthy eating habits!

YOU CAN DO IT! those photos show great progress! You have already proved success to yourself once before, i have no doubt you can do it again :) btw, i think i have the same juicer as you :)

Btw, where can you buy that juicer? I've looked about but haven't seen one similar.

Good for you. Eating right is a daily struggle. Hopefully this reboot works well, and it'll jumpstart your re-commitment to working out three times a week. If you won't do it for yourself, do it for your girlfriend. I'm sure she loves you no matter what, but shedding a few pounds and toning up a bit definitely doesn't hurt. :)

Today is Day 5 and I haven't given in just yet. 10 more hours to go and I will have made it a full 5 days. I can't say the same for my girlfriend though, but that's ok, this was about me anyway!
