Summer TV/book list

Posted by Bone, 13 May 2013 · 1470 views

I have fuckall to do this summer, so I think I'm going to waste it away watching TV. So far, I've been recommended:
  • Treme
  • Firefly
  • Freaks & Geeks
  • Hannibal (watched the first episode, not a huge fan so far)
  • Deadwood
  • Twin Peaks
  • Boardwalk Empire
  • The Wire
  • Breaking Bad (I watched the first season, didn't love it)
I doubt I'll come anywhere near to watching all of these, but a man can dream.

Whenever I'm feeling like shit for watching a dozen episodes of a show in a row, I plan on recuperating with books. I don't have a comprehensive list, but I have a few titles I want to look into.

Any book or TV show recommendations? :D

The only thing I've seen on that TV list is "Twin Peaks". I've seen that series at least 3 times. It's so weird, dark, and hilarious. Right up your alley, I think.

I like "Elementary". It's a Sherlock Holmes adaptation that is pretty much a procedural cop show, but with a Sherlock who isn't a total social retard or slime ball, and omg fuckin' sexy Lucy Liu. I'm shitting my pants just thinking that the two hour season finale this Thursday.

The book list looks pretty good. Ugh, I fuckin' hated the "Great Gatsby". But I suppose it's got to be read at least once.

Haha my dad actually recommended Twin Peaks. He said that it was "really weird, so you should like it"

I've seen a couple episodes of Elementary actually, and my friend just told me she watched 10 episodes in a day. :p So I'll add that to the list.

Keeping up with the Kardashians.

I don't really watch TV, but your book list looks pretty all right. I like 1984 and The Invisible Man a lot.

Get a job.

I have two.

Good book list. Some of those titles are on my own.  Haruki Murakami!! 'IQ84' is a good one and I enjoyed 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' a lot.

I hated Boardwalk Empire.  So freaking boring.

Hmm, I love the first four seasons of The West Wing (the latter seasons are nowhere near as good).  I can't really think of any others offhand that aren't obvious like Doctor Who and Firefly (I do love Firefly by the way, and there are only 14 episodes so it goes really quickly).

I've read a lot of what you have on your list; I wanted to comment on The Fault in Our Stars.  I love the way John Green writes.  That was my first Green book, and now I am looking to read the rest.  Joe has read all of them and recommends them.  I think the next one I read will be Looking for Alaska (which I see you have read! :D)

The Magicians is a neat read, it's like Harry Potter meets The Chronicles of Narnia except with realistic young adults, sex and alcohol.

The vast majority of what I've read is fantasy, and I noticed that most of your books are not fantasy so I don't know if you are interested in tons of fantasy recommendations.  But if you are, I can babble on for a fair bit about it :p

I would definitely, definitely recommend The Book Thief! I saw it on your list, it's one title you don't want to miss.

Thanks everyone!

Nymh, I've been considering delving into The West Wing, but I'm not sure I'm ready for such a huge undertaking. Looking for Alaska just made me sad, I don't know if I'm ready for The Fault in Our Stars yet. :p
