chewing sounds smacking annoyance
You all saw my status upate about peopling chewing. Well, my annoyance actually has a name to it. Misophonia is when small everyday sounds cause an acute reaction in you.

I have this. I can not stand being in the same room as my mom when she eats her jaw pops all the time, I want to strangle people over loud crunching notices, and I detest, absolutely detest, the sound of smacking.
I want to punch things, scream and strangle people when I get set off. And sometimes I can't tell them, "for the love of god stop smacking/chewing/crunching/ect!!!!" So I suffer in silence, digging my nails into my palms and trying to pretend I'm somewhere else. (Which never works by the way)
How hard is it to eat with your mouth closed??? (Which can be the source of the sounds, usually the source of loud smacking).
How bloody hard it is to not chew like you're a tiger ripping the skin of an animal?
If you are behind two closed doors and down the hallway and I can hear you...YOU'RE BEING TO DANG LOUD. I should not be able to hear you eating/chewing/slurping/smacking from another room!

And when you're on a flight that's 3 hours long, and they just won't stop. It's torture. I want to throw myself out the plane window.

My mom has just discovered this with my little sister recently. I don't live with my parents, but my mom told me a little bit about it. My sister gets horrible anxiety, and has a super hard time with noises, particularly chewing. People don't understand, but she's affected by it a lot. With her being so young, it's a lot of stress on her. Our outside family feels so awkward, and thinks she is so sensitive, but it's not a problem for me. I don't really do anything that bothers her, and I wish that they wouldn't act so weird around her at family dinners and stuff. What do you do to deal with it? She takes some calming supplements and does some anxiety work.

I have anti-anxiety meds, but they really don't do too much because they mainly function as sleep meds. As for dealing with it, if I can I try and move away from the noise if possible or I try and block it out with something like music. In my experence, there's not too much I can do aside from moving away if possible.

If it's a situation where you can use them, earplugs and especially headphones tend to help for me. If I listen to music it tends to eventually distract me enough to get over it. If all else fails, I just remove myself from the situation and take a few deep breaths. But yeah, I definitely know the feeling, it's torture. :(
