Do a lot of studying into types of dogs. Don't end up with one you can't handle. Also make sure you have time out of the day to train, play, and socialize. I spend at least 2 or 3 hours with my dog every day. Granted she needs more mental stimulation that others, it is more than some other dogs that can be more lazily handled.
A good podcast to check out is It's a Doggy Dog World. It is a podcast done by a few dog trainers from San Diego and they will help you get prepared. :)
