It has hints of scifi veiled underneath drama/romance. In essence though, it's scifi without the scifi. I absolutely loved it, and have made it my second pick of 2010.

My pick of the year is easily Monsters. It's like The Road meets Cloverfield, except instead of man and son, it's man and woman.

I got around to watching it this afternoon, and it was pretty awesome..!

I have to say it really is scifi without the scifi.,. I wasn't sure what you were talking about there but now i understand haha

If you're going to put Memento up there, I'd recommend watching Pi too.

The Tourist was pretty entertaining. Also liked Secret Window, or just about anything with Depp in it. For comedies see Death at a Funeral (British version, not the American remake).

Faster was REALLY good. it's an action movie the ending is insane

Faster was action-ey, the plot was not too great and the acting blew.

American Psycho
Enter the Void
Memento.

Memento is fantastic.

Pi was awesome.

The Tourist was pretty entertaining. Also liked Secret Window, or just about anything with Depp in it. For comedies see Death at a Funeral (British version, not the American remake).

Tourist blew. Depp and Jolie can't act together for shit.

The Fighter was a good movie as well..Finally Mark had a decent movie.

Also Black Swan, Inception, Despicable Me..

The Fighter was AMAZING, the town was pretty good.

Things I can't believe NOBODY HAS SAID YET:
The Machinist, The Dark Knight, Repo Men, Shooter, PULP FUCKING FICTION

Devil was surprisingly good, coming from MK Shyamalan. Not in your field, though.

Wall-E...Boondock Saints, Boondock Saints: All Saint's Day, Reservoir Dogs, Platoon, Up, Sin City, District 9, Saving Private Ryan, Black Hawk Down, Sherlock Holmes,

Stuff that you didn't ask for that is still good:
The Prestige, Full Metal Jacket, Labyrinth, Twelve, Twelve Monkeys, Thirteen, Children of Men, Crash (2004)

Tourist was terrible?? Damn, I was actually going to eventually get around to watching it.. I guess I can skip that one =p

Boondock saints is one of my fav movies... I wasn't too much a fan of the sequel.

Another one I saw the other night which was surprisingly good was a Perfect Getaway (2009) with a very good twist ending.

Her reign of hotness began on the OC where she played that lesbian bar keeper who started a relationship with Marissa Cooper. Holla

Boo the OC. Yay for lesbians! If only her characters transcended into reality. Apparently she's been married to some dude for 5 years now.

I know you requested movies that are both good and recent, but most have already been mentioned/there is a shortage:

I liked District 9 more than I thought I would. Thats recent right?

I would also like to add Jackie Brown to the list of Tarantino movies. Less known, just as awesome.

If you can handle subtitles, old graphics, and a plot you need to be conscious to understand, Rashomon, Seven Samurai, and Yojimbo.

Also, Drag Me to Hell is a FUCKING GEM. Watch it in a group ITS SUPER SCARY111!!!

I watched the The Quick and the Dead for the first time last night. Didn't expect too much from it, but I noticed in the listing that it had Gene Hackman, Sharon Stone, Leonardo DiCaprio and Russel Crowe. It was an entertaining gunsling-western. The plot did fit snugly into several tropes, including a feministic something-to-prove and a son-wants-father's-respect. Where it surprised me was the protagonist's attitude towards killing. Where I expected the the plot to take a feminist "I'm equal to man, I can kill just like him" tone, it was the opposite. A woman gunslinger afraid to kill, but out for revenge.

I watched the Green Hornet last night in 3D.

I had low expectations so it was actually funnier than I thought -> props to Seth Rogan.

Jay Chou was alright.... but i'm sure him being starred in the movie helped sell tickets because there were tons of Asians at the showing.

Would recommend if you're going to the movies, but don't watch it in 3D (not many scenes really were in 3D)

I really disliked Pandorum. For hard-scifi lovers though, I'd recommend Primer, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, Forbidden Planet. Sunshine too, I suppose. I REALLY liked it up until the climax and denounment. At that point, I rolled my eyes but it's still a great film.
