Haha, good analogy. However, traffic rules are rules, not guidelines. To my knowledge, there aren't any "rules" for status upating, or are there?

Because it's generally new, having been integrated relatively recently. We haven't bothered making special status update rules because the site rules still apply and nobody had abused it to a point where we actually had to make new rules.

There isn't, it's such a harmless feature that I doubt they care much about creating any rules for it and to just follow the general forum rules.

And the trading post is there for a reason. You don't drive on the wrong side of the road during rush hour and say "hey no one is using the outbound lane anway."

Last time I checked, nothing really serious was going on in the status updates, if anything should be brought up and gained attention, then the person should be making a topic for it to allow more transferring of information, if it's something silly, we again, have the Chit-Chat threads for a reason, nobody should be having a serious discussion in a Facebook-esque status in the first place, there's a stupid character limit and the status is just going to be blown out of the recent area sooner or later anyways.

Am I really the sole person? Before I joined were there advertising on status updates =p

I'm just saying there is a huge difference between me and Maharanya.

I usually wait an hour to repost my status (or update it when something is sold). I sell a lot of stuff so my actual status update is things that actually sell.

Again, i'm not against a posting cooldown or a filter system... people can feel free to block my status updates entirely as well..

No offence Scot, I do admire your guides and contributions - but I do not think I am the sole person whole started advertising or mass spamming.. just sayin

To be blunt, you're a huge part of the problem. You're not entitle to have the homepage as your advertising space.
And if you sell a lot of your stuff, why have I seen dozens of updates about your goddamn Frogarotts? Even if you're not the sole person who participates in "mass spamming" it's still annoying in my opinion.

If you really wanted to stop people spamming status updates just make it so 1 status update costs 1 post off their post count.

Actually Bone, everyone is entitled to make status updates. Do I post every 30 seconds? No, I wait at least an hour - I could do it every minute but I don't so other people can post their stuff.

Obviously you can't read properly if you think all I sell are Frogarotts. Do I sell a lot of stuff? read my trader feedback.

Do I judge the things that you do? No I don't - even if I think you are an ignorant child.

Then everyone would start spamming in the forums to counter that Posted Image

Which would be against the rules and lead to them having their post count reset. :)

Once an hour is excessive. As Scot and I have said, you're only reposting your statuses so they will be at the top. It's unnecessary and obnoxious.

Obviously you can't read properly if you think all I sell are Frogarotts. Do I sell a lot of stuff? read my trader feedback.

Did I ever say all you sell are Frogarotts?

Do I judge the things that you do? No I don't - even if I think you are an ignorant child.

Do you read what you're posting? In any case, calling me an ignorant child doesn't further your argument at all.

I'm leaving this thread open because input into the matter is a good thing. If I see any more useless name-calling below this post, though, I'm giving a warn.

it's still annoying and nobody likes it.

YOU may find it annoying, but I sure as hell could care less about it, it's just a silly gimmick and is hardly a main attraction of the site, if you don't like it, there's a nice button at the top to hide the widget entirely so you never see it.

By definition a status update should only be used to indicate a change of status so unless your previous situation has changed in some way you shouldn't be making an update at all.

I thought that the contents of my post would be my opinion was implied, but I edited it for you.

I want to see constructive/entertaining updates, even new advertisements that haven't been repeated dozens of times, so hiding the widget wouldn't accomplish much.

I always hated this, since I always got it wrong. :/

Can you mention the filter idea at the bi-weekly staff meeting or something?

I completely agree with everyone. The advertising in the status updates is quite annoying. Community members knkow where the forum is and can easily find it through the forum category.

agreed.

there is no need for people to post that they are selling items - as there is a trading board -.-
(and it is hard for the nubs to find, and you can lead a nub to water but cant always drown it... but still they need to learn)

the occasionally "looking to buy Xmil quick" is not so bad, but the constant spam of advertising is getting ridiculous
