I suspect the reason for the price difference was the fact that I was looking at using a six core i7, not a four core.

On the first page you linked, the X6 outperforms the i7 on 3D rendering, and only a 1.6% increase in video rendering time...

Wait. Where did you get the 3d rendering from?

When using Cinebench 11.5 we see for the first time in this review the Phenom X6 outperforming the i7-950. The AMD chip's 6 cores at 3.3GHz manage to process the workload quicker than 8 threads on the Intel CPU at 3.0GHz. If 3D rendering is a task that is performed often then the X6 CPU could be the way to go.

Actually, the graph seems to be labelled incorrectly. The bars apparently display the results from Cinebench, where the higher the output, the better the result.Yeah.... but the graph says something completely different... So they guy writing the review read wrong....
You can check this by googling other Cinebench scores for comparison.

Also I would get the sandy bridge (2500K+) as they aren't that much more expensive.

Thats actually what caused one of the many xbox 360 red rings, because the games had too much resolution and polygons and whatnot
