Hi everyone,

here's something I've been wondering about - why are there public and private versions of the programs anyway? I mean sure, I understand that you don't want people to just come in grab the programs and leave again without contributing anything, but it's kinda frustrating to know that the program you're trying is delibaretly crippled so it doesn't work as well as it could...

For example, the SpudsCounter tool is quite nice, but I only seem to get 30 NP every ti'me I use it to play potato counter, which really is nothing - I can typically get 400 NP or so per play on average when I play myself and even though that takes a few more minutes I think 30 NP is ridicoulously low. I'm not sure if there's a private version of it that works better but that's what I think.

Sorry if I seem ungrateful, I'm not I think it's really cool to have this site and the programs and all that stuff, but it's just a thought.

the private programs I guess are kinda like a special gift to members who have been with codex for awhile, also kind of an incentive to stay I think....but theres also the issue of security reasons.....if the best programs were out there for public use anybody could get their hands on them and disable them like tnt

It's not that public programs are purposly crippled, it's that private programs are upgraded. And is it frustrating? More the insentive to be active :) .

@Chloe - Well I don't buy that really... now the public programs out there and everybody can use them, so how's that different? They're not disabled either.

@TheWu - Heh, yeah, I try to be, but I don't know what I can contribute really. :) And wrt crippledness - it really is the same isn't it? If the private programs are better on purpose that's the same as when the public ones are worse on purpose.

Ah well I'll just try to stay active.

I guess it's sort of the same, theoretically. But the motives are different. We're not doing it to make it hard for regular members. We do it to make it easier for private members.

I think what chloe was trying to say is that if every program was abused then neopets would figure out what was going on ... or neopets might get their hands on the program itself and disable it . The incentive thing is totally correct...it is an incentive...

si'mply put, we do things the way we do for a reason...and that reason is because it works that way :)

Exactly. Say we get a new Main Shop AB out, and it gets put in public. Almost I'mmediately (Well, as in 2 or 3 months ) , Neopets will change their haggle code so our AB doesn't work anymore.

If it's in private, it will take them a bit longer to catch on, thus our AB will still be effective.

Never take me seriously. It only ends in tears.

Yeah I was basically going to say what hydro and dolphinbomb said.

And besides, if they were all in public, then almost nobody would post because most leechers just want the programs.

Think about it, who would chat if there were no programs allowed here? I'm willing to bet that at least 1/2 of the members would leave

Black Pawkeet Slots has been disabled twice by neopets after people abused the public program from another site.  Neocodex has very good public programs such as the faerie crossword AP, cliffhanger AP and I think the private programs will be much better !

Basically, the better the programe, the more trusting and loyal you have to be to get it, you have to work for it, you don't expect people to work hard on programes just to get nothing.

The private programs aren't just upgrades of the public ones. We have completely different ones there. And I won't even begin to mention the retired program section. :p

    I was gonna say what Jester said about leechers ^^;
One of the things Ford Prefect had always found hardest to understand about humans was their habit of continuously stating and repeating the very very obvious, as in It's a nice day, or You're very tall, or Oh dear you seem to have fallen down a thirty-foot well, are you all right?

Forums work because of people who go out of their way to be active. The best programs are reserved for the people who go that extra mile to help others out, and really contribute to the site. Private programs aren't just for every run of the mill members who strolls through to download some things. Sadly, someti'mes it takes the promise of better programs to get people to become active, and, if that's the only way it works, then that's what has to be done.

Private is like an elite status, as you must know, you have to work hard to ge the spoils of a private member. That's about all I can think of to explain it.

NOt as much as somepeople may think., Private member is a priveledge to those that are loyal, and active to the board. It isn't like you have to jump through hoops of fire or anything like that :p . Prove yourselfs more so, and remain acive, and loyal to the board for long enough, and chances are you may become a retired member!

Private people and above vote on you to see if you make it in, so posting alot and being here for a long ti'me doesn't mean you'll make private.
