Sooooo I know that getting 500 posts won't get you advanced anymore

but can we do this entire 'nominating" thing now? I think there are some deserving people O.o

Wait, so before this, it would be the moment you reached 500 non-spam posts, you'd be promoted to Advanced membership?
Was there any reviewing or anything like that?

This might be what you're actually planning, but, as a suggestion, why not make a post count requirement, and then after you reach that, you are reviewed and considered for advancement?
That way, mere spam posts won't help you be promoted, but there still is that post count that you need.
(K, after reading the entire thread, and ignoring most of what Sweeney has posted, there has been some similar suggestions to this, though it probably went unnoticed)

The reason i'm saying that you need a post count is because those spam posts actually do mean something. Posts like "Thanks" or "This looks great", or "Great Guide" help give the creators of the topic feedback and a sense of accomplishment, pride, and gratitude; they can know that people are using and enjoying what they've made. Otherwise, you'll have a "here's a Speed Neoquest Guide (I love it btw), and all following posts'll just be "problem, problem, problem, problem, problem."

Are you completely retarded? What stops you from sending a thank you message directly to the person through pm? This way there are no spam posts or people complaining that spam posts should be allowed.

And there is a rep button on here too. I don't know if it unlocks anything or is purely for bragging rights, but it avoids posting a simple Thank you.

Unlocks absolutely nothing, but it does show that people are indeed thankful for their work.

and ignoring most of what Sweeney has posted

Words too big for you? Ideas too complex?
I wouldn't worry, it's a common problem.

Spam posts are still posts, and they help keep some boards and topics alive. Besides, mere spam posts aren't going to be able to get you advanced, potential advancers will still have to be reviewed.
Having your topic contain filled with thank yous is much better than an empty topic, and multiple PMs. The point is that people can see that there are others who have used and appreciate what the post is about.
In the trading post, trading score aside, would you rather trade with somebody who has 0 posts in his topic, or one that has multiple "Thanks, great trade" and "PMed/Sent"?

Also, rep is great and provides credibility, you don't know when somebody has rep'd you, and what they rep'd you for. Or would you rather have every rep be followed with a PM?

You're partly right, but mostly wrong.

Removing the 500 count incentive doesn't eliminate spam, and it certainly doesn't eliminate "Thank you" posts. It prunes them down to people who actually mean the sentiment behind their spam.
Although, for the record, when the person actually feels what they say they feel, it doesn't count as spam, in my personal (and generally very accurate) opinion.

I'd rather have three thank yous from people I recognise as having taste and genuine gratitude, than 50 thank yous from faceless fuckwits.
