How about Nas? How can you possibly leave that name out? Illmatic is one of the BEST albums out ever and that was his damn debut album. Weezy has dropped off with that autotune bs, singing, and talking about the same ole thing to make sales. I can't remember the last time I heard weezy spit and I don't shake my head thinking about that crap he is saying. I'll admit though when that dude is on he is ON, and very few people can mess with him when he was. Eminem is ok now he is just going through a transition now about rapping about a little bit of life now. You can't put weezy on Tupac or Biggies level at all ever. Those two revolutionized what rap is today, and are icons that reach out to people all across the world besides the U.S and Europe. I can't bust on the rappers though these days with their weak raps but hey they making money!

Nas-AZ-Jay-Z-50 Cent (when he used to rap) and others I don't feel like typing any more

If you don't have Nas in any top list then you haven't listen to some real rap.

and screw that weak hip-hop crap on the radio! Listen to some straight gangsta rap and thats where the real flow is

I think it's a fallcy to consider the greats as those who are the most commercially successful. No doubt that Jay-Z, Nas, and Biggie are talented, but I would say Twista has better technical skill while Kanye is a much better wordsmith. Again these are fairly big names but if we really want to talk pure skill i throw my vote for jedi mind tricks

I think Wayne is good lyrically... like versus he sais like, "karma is a bitch, well just make sure that bitch is beautiful" and "I tried to pay attention but attention payed me"... and so on. He has a lot of really good versus but like someone else said on here they aren't very deep sort of speak. Like its not talking about anything but same old same old crap like money, sex, drugs, blah blah blah... And that's why i put Tupac and Biggie and Eminem before him... dont get me wrong they got songs about that shit too but it wasnt like every song all the time like wayne. I also notice that songs from Eminem (his old shit) and Tupac and Biggie... their songs usually have a message behind it, and i just dont see that with wayne.

Wow. Everyone in this thread has a lot to learn about 'Rap'.

Rap has devolved a bunch, as has music in general. It's about making money, and the people that have the better image are going to win out in that category. There are tons of rappers out there who haven't been heard of in the mainstream that would kill Nas, Biggie, Pac, Jay-Z and Eminem.

Rapping to me is modern poetry. It's about structure, mechanics, diction. No one that I hear on the radio or a party exemplify these traits. You want some good rap?

I think Lil Wayne should be ranked up there with the greatest of all time. His past couple hip hop releases have not been disappointing at all. All the hipster hip hop fans hate Lil Wayne because of all the Lollipop shit he did for the girls while he was on codeine. Honestly, if you're a hip hop fan and you hate Lil Wayne I consider you a fucking hipster. Talib Kweli said in a video one time that he thinks Lil Wayne is one of the best rappers of all time and created some of the best songs. If you youtube "talib kweli lil wayne" it'll be the first result.

To the dude that said we all need to study hip hop more, that video you posted the dude said "rap stars sample beats." That beat he's using is an extremely popular dubstep song and I don't even think it fits well in a hip hop context. Bunch of backpacker shit.

I don't find lil wayne pleasing at all, the autotune isn't easy on the ears for me, and the songs that i've listened to seem to have no meaning. The only good thing about him is he makes catchy beats, to put him up there alongside pac, nas, biggie etc is just silly. I don't know anyone that says "I find lil wayne is an inspiration".

I don't even get why you guys are wasting time listing Eminem here, its bad enough that every line he spews is clear recited countless times (shows lack of skill), at this point he has been commercialized past the point of ever being an actual rapper. This is the entire reason that 50 Cent didn't make my list. Arguably Marshall Mathers was at his best when he was under the stage name Slim Shady, again commercial overkill he has had more stage names than any rapper I can think of. Most rappers get theirs when they are kids, they don't make them up and change them as they go along.

And to say that Eminem lacks skill is just ignorant, to break through the underground and make it big time in a genre that was dominated by black rappers, he must have some skill right? To take someone off your list just because they "commercialised" is stupid, if you show a lot of skill on a track it's there forever to prove that they can do it, just because they made a song with a pop artist it doesn't take away that skill.

What I did was compile a list on rappers based on skill, not hip-hop artists who have better record deals, and as such perhaps you should review my list and then respond?

Snoop Dogg I debated for awhile but most of his good songs have been commercialized too much. I personally really respect him when he comes in as a guest spot for songs is when he's at his best.

I don't think that 213 or Eazy E are all that talented since everything both do sounds about the same to everything else they do. No variation which is needed.

Funny you mention Oxycotin, I just listened to that.
