But you must be nominated by an advanced member and then it goes to vote.
Really, you just need to be active and contribute from time to time.
And it is permanent.
derp, Applepi beat me to it.

doesn't it just inundate the forum with pointless spam?
The post count, which is now only a rough guideline more than anything, does not singly serve to inundate the forum with useless spam. It is the ignorance of the new members who fail to read the FAQ's which they are pointed to in their personal introduction topics, which plainly states that 500 is no longer the method to get advanced, that flood the forum with their pointless spam posts.
Even if that was still the hard and fast way to get Advanced, I still don't understand the point in flooding the forum with useless bullshit to get there. How are we supposed to help people or learn anything if we have to constantly wade through page upon page of stupid inane posts?

The people who want advanced membership ASAP and are willing to spam are not the type of people that care about other people or consider the damage they do to the site. They're only concerned with what they can get out of it all.
500 posts isn't that hard to get. Maybe this would be an issue if that was the only way to access to program manager, but it's not. Program manager is free and more than generous enough given the work the staff go through not only to refine the programs currently existing but to not just throw any old .exe file in for you to suffer the consequences. Advanced membership is fairly cheap as a subscription, especially if you have the connection to compete with standard US autobuyers, so that is also an option if you find the wait difficult.
With all those benefits, 500 posts (roughly) for advanced membership isn't a steep ask. Since it is permanent. Although as has been mentioned, advanced membership is granted more based on community nomination than post count.

I think it's pretty steep, but reasonable I guess. I don't like to post much, it's a big problem for me.
lol just quote someone else's post and say "LOL SO FUNNY" or something.

Actually, that would probably count as spam.
Unless you actually have something valid and useful to add to the conversation, refrain from commenting.
Orrr you could rephrase "LOL SO FUNNY" to "That's hilarious. I love how __________________. _____________ really cracked me up." or something.

I copied it from Wikipedia
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[3] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[4] The noun troll may refer to the provocative message itself, as in: "That was an excellent troll you posted".
While the word troll and its associated verb trolling are associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels subjective, with trolling describing intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context. For example, mass media uses troll to describe "a person who defaces Internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."[5][6]
