I suggest that next to the topic list of a forum we add a count of how many additional posts have been made since you last clicked the topic and if you click that number it would take you to the last post that you read in that topic.

I don't know if that huge run on sentence made sense, so ask if you have questions.

A " Go to the first unread post " button?
Not sure if "Watch Topic" here already does the same...

I think watching a topic gives you notifications. Tbh the activity level of the board makes the "View active content" button more than enough.

It's not feasible given the number of threads and number of topics which would need to be tracked.

I think IPB already tracks it though... they store that data in your cookie with a certain expiry time so that you don't write off the end of the cookie. It has to do with that little orange icon next to the topic title in view active content.

If envelopes are colored in, there are new posts within the topic. Can see that on a forum level as the envelope/folder next to the forum will be red.

There's no method to go to the last post that you have read, but clicking on the time above the name in the last post column will take you to the last post in the thread, from there you can just tab back to the last post you've read.

Tracking every thread in every forum for which post you last viewed would be a massive strain on resources.

If you're using the New Content list it actually automatically includes taking you to the first unread post when you click a thread title.

While on the topic of topics, is there anyway to unwatch a topic?

Instead of "last reply on Nov blah blah" is there any way to change it to "last reply x days ago"

There's a list of watched topics in your settings. You can remove it from there.

I use view active content. In there, I have a little orange icon next to the topic title that has an arrow on it. Clicking that takes me to the first unread post. It uses page anchors though, so depending on when your browser evaluates the anchor, you may or may not get to the actual post it anchors on (if it evaluates the anchor and then a large image loads, for example).
