I recently talked with one of my friends and this topic came up. I personally love to read, almost always for my own entertainment, while my friend doesn't like to read, for what reasons they currently escape me.

However my questions now are to my fellow Neocodex users:

-Why do you read?
-What type of material do you read?
-For novels what genres do you enjoy?
and last but not least
-Any good books you'd like to recommend? :p (shameless plug)

I guess I'll start first.

As per the first question its stated above. I usually read novels, and of those Im more interested in non-fiction then historical, however some historical books are actually quite interesting. Of the non-fiction book I tend to be towards the fantasy section aka dragons, magic, medieval times, ect. ect.. As for my recommendations I've always loved Eragon and the books that make up it's cycle. (Loves Dragons Posted Image)

I saw there was another board posted a while ago about books however it wasn't quite geared toward my question and was rather out-dated in my opinion at about 09. As many good books could have come out since then :D

    Why do you read?
    I read mostly for pleasure.

What type of material do you read?
A lot of fiction novels and series, and books about math. I also do quite a bit of independent study, which is solely for my brain pleasure.

For novels what genres do you enjoy?
    Fantasy and sci-fi.

Any good books you'd like to recommend?
    Where do I start?
    • C. S. Friedman: Coldfire Trilogy (my favorite fictional character of all time is in these books, mmm Gerald Tarrant)
    • Elizabeth Haydon: Rhapsody series (if you want something a little girly)
    • Greg Bear: Darwin's Radio (I read this while pregnant. Talk about a mindfuck)
    • Daniel Keyes: Flowers for Algernon
    • Ken Kesey: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
    • Robert Jordan: Wheel of Time series
    • Raymond E. Feist: All
    • George R. R. Martin: Song of Ice and Fire saga (don't read if you get attached to characters. Well, on second thought, maybe you should even if you do)
    That's enough for now.

I read ever night before I sleep. I prefer fantasy books, but sometimes I love reading history stuff (preferably british history) or biographies of weird people or just novels, written by weird people. My favourite author of all time is John Irving. I also read pretty much everything from Rebecca Gable. Last night/this morning I finished a book written by punkrockbigmouths mom and it made me cry (only the end though, the rest of the book mostly just cracked me up).
If it comes to fantasy I surely prefer childrens books. Yes, I am a huuuuge fan of Harry Potter. I also love pretty much everything by Cornelia Funke, most of all Inkheart, Inkblood and Inkdeath.
Sometimes -not too often but sometimes- I totally enjoy reading Poems. There I prefer Herman Hesse, a German writer, who I admire. Or Shell Silverstein, who is so weird and funny and also right, I admire him aswell.
    The End.

    -Why do you read?
    Usually I read if I'm bored/my friend(s) recommend a good book (or manga :3) o:

-What type of material do you read?
Manga ^u^~~! ..But I also enjoy reading books that are a part of a series or (long) novels

-For novels what genres do you enjoy?
Action/Adventure, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Survival
    & I'm generally not much of a non-fiction fan unless it's about mysteries/investigations o:
/&& I have this hate/love relationship with Horror novels; they're usually super interesting (or the ones that I find at least).. but I get scared so easily cX/

-Any good books you'd like to recommend?
    Hum...
Novel wise- If you can deal with serious gross scenes (detailed parts about the main character's skin being clawed off/eating his own puke to survive/etc.) but enjoy adventure/survival-y books then I'd recommend Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen (not for easily queasy people though)
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is also really good if you like Sci-Fi/Adventure/Survival o:
The Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan are pretty good also I guess, I like the Greek mythology in it.. but I just personally prefer more action/adventure in books like those x) It is pretty good though ^^
&... I can't really think of others right now on the top of my head cX.. but I'll add others if/when I think of them c:

    &&Manga wise :3-
I've been reading Demon Diary lately and it's so cute/comical :x3:~~!

    Why?
I read because it's a better use of time than interacting with other humans or playing Neopets.

    What do I read/enjoy reading?
I read a shitton of historical fiction/biographies, but mainly due to school. What I really enjoy are just plain old novels (with some fantasy thrown in), as well as the occasional nonfiction. I'll elaborate:

    Recommendations?

    • House of Leaves: pretentious mindfuck, but also some of the best writing out there.
    • One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: classic, no explanation needed....read this.
    • Broom of The System: also somewhat pretentious but hilarious and incredible.
    • Waterland: often missed, but a classic.
    • As I Lay Dying: my favorite book. Faulkner was a genius.
    • His Dark Materials series: the anti-Narnia!
    • Lord of the Rings: do I really need to explain?
    • Harry Potter series: judge me, I don't care.
    • Freakonomics: a wholly entertaining introduction to behavioral economics.

No, but (based on my 30-second Google search) it looks pretty interesting. But alternate fiction is a dangerous topic for me...I tend to forget to distinguish between the actual history and what is fictional.

I personally don't read at all for entertainment. I'll read more for learning something new, like for my college classes.
Books that i have read and liked are all in the utpoian society theme and how they all fail. (ie: Animal Farm and 1984 by George Orwell, and Lord of the Flies by William Golding)
My girlfriend on the other hand reads 24/7 she is currently reading the Hunger Games series (currently on the last book Mocking Jay) and loves it.
When she was talking about all i kept thinking about was Battle Royale, so if you liked that movie or book you would probably like The Hunger Games.

1984 and LoTF are more like dystopian novels...
(If you're into the whole utopian/dystopian subgenre, I'd recommend Brave New World and The Road. Even if I hate those books and the subgenre)

As for 1984, I read that in Gov. was quite an interesting book, seemed REALLLLLLY slow the first 1/4 of the book but then got pretty good.
