The dude with the creepy mask is Bane (possible spoilers on that wiki), played by Tom Hardy. Derp, soul beat me to it! (Side note: He was in Inception as well. Nolan seems to stick to a select group of actors for his films; Tom Hardy, Marilon Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine all being examples. I don't blame him, they're all pretty exceptional.)

In the true Batman comics, Bane does defeat Batman, at least for awhile - from wikipedia: "Aware that a direct assault on Batman would be foolish, Bane instead destroys the walls of Arkham Asylum -- allowing its deranged inmates (including the Joker, Two-Face, Mr Freeze, the Riddler, the Scarecrow, theMad Hatter, the Ventriloquist, Firefly, Cavalier, and Victor Zsasz) to escape into Gotham City. Consequently, Batman has to spend the next three months rounding up the escapees. Having run himself to exhaustion in the process, Batman returns to Wayne Manor after completing this mission—where Bane ambushes him (having previously determined his secret identity). Bane attacks Batman in the Batcave, defeats him, and delivers the final blow: breaking Batman's back, leaving him a paraplegic. Bane thus becomes the only man to have "Broken the Bat". "

I highly doubt Nolan will stick to the original Bane/Batman storyline, but since it's the last of his Batman films I think there's a high chance we'll see Batman kick the bucket. Plus the tagline for the movie is "The legend ends"... but who knows! It might be too easy for Batman to die, that's what everyone will expect.

The mask actually pumps "Venom" into him, an experimental drug that makes him physically stronger.


And Bruce Wayne isn't the only Batman, because he was really only human, Jean Paul Valley was given the batman mantle during several batman storylines. Bane never actually kills Batman, only puts an end to Bruce Waynes role as batman by paralyzing him. It's after this incident that Jean Paul Valley becomes batman in Bruce Waynes place.

I find these movies kind of boring, and I'm not attracted to Christian Bale. But this guy I know likes it all, so I'll probably get stuck watching this in the theater with him when it comes out.

I'm pretty excited about this one. Heath Ledger was such a great villain as Joker in the previous Batman. It'll be hard to be that. I hope this movie will be just as good.
