I don't seem to understand the rule that says you are not allowed to sell your stuff for usd or any form of real currency but I've seen some people selling np for gift cards and such. Any help is greatly appreciated

It's illegal to sell anything Neopets related for real currency outside of NC Mall crap, thus we don't allow it to be said, but you can take it to a PM if you want to do it.
The newest editorial says it perfectly, actually.

Buying or selling Neopoints for real life money is NEVER legitimate. Any account discovered to be buying or selling items / Neopoints / Neopets for real life cash (outside of the NC Mall) will have all of their accounts frozen.

It's fine to sell for gift cards because you can actually physically own those. You can't sell Neopets virtual stuff for real money legally because they remain the property of Neopets, not the owner of the account which they're on so we don't allow people to sell for real money publicly on the forum for that reason.
