As someone who knows very little about hardware, I have no idea what laptops are good. Would anyone be able to recommend, or, if possible, link an amazon(.co.uk) page where I can buy it?

My requirements:

• Must be very good in terms of RAM or whatever.
• At least have 2 USB and ethernet ports each (although I could manage with only one ethernet port).
• Must run on Windows Vista or 7.
• Must have good reviews.
• Would prefer it to be less than £350/$530.
• Be as good-looking as possible.
• CD drive/slot.

Going for a bit, be back in a little while.

Well, I have no idea what RAM does, I just recognise that as a computer jargon term. To be honest though, I'll probably be using it between schoolwork, programs and just storing files. Is that passable?

I will probably just dig out some of my old PC games and bung them on. They're pretty low-tech, so I doubt that will affect anything? To answer your other point, I live in the very south of England. That ok?

What schoolwork (are we talking papers or photoshop or Zbrush or...), what programs (word? world of warcraft?), and what files (documents, pdfs, psds, 3d models, code)?

It's kinda hard to offer specs for something this vague.

Schoolwork - papers.
Programs - already specified.
Files - everything to do with the above + some image files.

No biggie. I use a x54h-blibbityfuckAsusDoesn'tNameAnything and it cost me about 320 USD. It's been running the shit out of everything my old (and basic) Dell machine chugged through, including higher-end games from years ago (Black & White 2). Only thing was I had to go in and download drivers for my video card straight from Intel because nothing useful was active until I did.

overclockers.co.uk and ebuyer are pretty good UK suppliers. I get a lot of my computer parts from them, although I don't ever look at laptops.

Errm, does that mean the Dell or Asus was the good one?

If I ever get another Laptop it will be a Sager. Desktop replacement ftw. However, way above your price range.

For your purposes you could probably just go to your nearest big-box retailer and buy the cheapest one they have on the shelf. You seriously are not asking for much in terms of power or compatibility. In my experience with retail laptops Acer is OK and Vaio are pretty good. I hate Dell with a passion and HP is adequate but usually a little more expensive than an equitable Acer machine.

Pchah, going to store takes way too much effort. I understand why you hate Dells though - 2 weeks of use and my one craps out.

No no, the Dell was my old machine before I got my Asus. The Dell was a basic non-gaming machine when I got it and it suffered running most of the stuff I wanted to run on it. My Asus cost about a fourth what the Dell cost me, and is an improvement in every way except for number of USB ports.
