Many sites are going down temporarily tomorrow in protest of SOPA.

Discuss.

Few sites include
Wikipedia
Mozilla
Reddit
among others.

Rather then "go dark" they would be better off temporarily blacklisting all government IPs.

I had heard Wikipedia was going down on the radio last night, but I didn't know about the others. I still don't see what this is actually going to accomplish besides being a headache to users.

If Neocodex goes down with any 502 errors tomorrow that's our contribution to the blackout.

Google's not blacking out, they're just putting a little link/note about SOPA on their main page.

I at least still have Memebase and My Little Bronies to waste time tomorrow.

It is supposed to be just for tomorrow, enjoy the day off or just don't use those sites as references? Wikipedia shouldn't be used for references anyways.

I have lots of works to be completed until Friday, and 1 day without google means much to me. I don't use wikipedia for references but use it to steal and change some definitions. :p Well, there are other sites to do the same but come on, without google it will be impossible to finish all of my work until Friday :(

That is good sensibility... lol. I seem to recall something about an Exacto Knife being changed to Xacto Knife rather recently. Since anyone can go in and edit the information it cannot be used as a credible source for anything beyond casual reading.

Real, solid sources can be found all over the internet with information that cannot be changed by everybody on a whim or as a joke. As such it is never recommended to use Wikipedia when doing research as a credible resource for the information you are gathering.

Err sorry I took it to mean don't use wikipedia as a research tool. But yes you shouldn't have wikipedia in your bibliographies.

I agree, but if you practice a little common sense and follow wikipedia's own references it can be a pretty good research tool for highschool papers and such.

If I was writing a thesis I'd probably visit a library and get more "solid" sources as you mentioned.

There is a difference between using something as a reference, and citing something as a reference. I reference wikipedia constantly, but I would never cite it as such.

I agree. As much as I'd miss the site tomorrow, I think there should be at least some form of black out.

I plan to stay off the internet as much as possible once it hits midnight where I am. I'm downloading everything I'll need to survive the day :p

    Wtf would that accomplish?

The purpose isn't to hurt or affect the government at it. Its to show the american people what will happen if the bill passes. If 180 million people try and visit google or youtube tomorrow and get a protest SOPA act instead, it kinda will wake them up and make them realize how retarded this law is.

If not a blackout, at least an alert in the Program Manager. SOPA would fuck this site over, easily.
