That is to say that it may well fester quietly in the minds of some individuals, but public profession of such bigotry will become socially stigmatised to a degree that that's where it will stay.

I am amazed by the sheer support that the gay community is getting currently but agree with Sweeney, it will be a long road until being gay will not cause some sort of reaction. As with any other situation, there will always be a group of people who will hate but I pray for the day where those people make up such a small proportion of the population that their voices can be muffled by all the positive messages.

the bit about the Boy Scouts made me think of this...
although the video is totally annoying
the fact that plenty of troops allow transgender individual to join there troops gives me hope
& i do believe that in time people will read about this in the history books and be astounded

I saw that video too, and all I could think of was how well her parents had trained/brainwashed her.

I'm going to take this opportunity to post an online petition related to the struggle of 'second class citizens' which I personally took the time to sign: link@change.com
In brief, Pepperdine, a top 200 university in the US, has denied an organization called Reach OUT, a straight-gay alliance, official recognition on their campus. This despite the compliance of the group with every reasonable request expected of other student organizations. This isn't about gay rights. This is about the right to organize publicly without fear of repercussions from a hostile administration. Just yesterday, when I signed, this had less than 500 of 1000 signatures. Now it has 1000 of 2000 signatures. Your signature can help.

Oh, I live to be the ruler of life, not a slave.

My mom is still homophobic, as far as I know. As are most people in my family. It's the way they, and most people, are raised in islamic cultures. I find this pretty weird because my mom is actually a really nice person with lots of sympathy but this "hate" for gays is something she's carried with her for over 40 years. I don't know how she feels anymore, but I can honestly say if she found out I was gay(hypothetically) she would still love me, but I don't doubt that she'd come to terms with it immediately.
