So my SSD totally fucking died. It didn't take that long either. Going back to a standard HDD is horrible and I want those SSD speeds back, however I don't want to keep forking out cash for the things, especially with the shitty capacity.
Does anyone have experience with hybrid drives? For anyone that isn't aware of hybrid drives, if the name isn't a giveaway enough, they're basically standard hard drives that also contain non-volatile memory. When working with data on the drive, you'll generally be working with data stored in the ssd-like cache, with the physical moving parts only being needed when the cache is full to shift some data to the platter, or when you require information not currently in the cache. Windows 7 will still store your operating system in flash memory, giving you ssd boot-times.

I've never tried one, nor do I know anyone that has, however it's so much cheaper than an SSD and you get a shit load more capacity.

Does anyone have experience with them? Have you also used an SSD? How do they compare?

Note: I just typed this out and realised it should be in hardware/software. I'm just gonna press post, so a mod or someone move it please :p

And you could have copied the textbox for the new post, created a thread in the correct section and used paste :p

I loved my SSD (even though it was only 8gb)... But they don't hold up too well when it comes to having liquids spilt on them :(

I'm not the one complaining :p

Have you tried a hybrid though?

I haven't even seen a hybrid over here.

What are they worth in price range when compared to a standard HDD vs a SSD?

You can get a 500GB momentus xt for like $100, so pretty damn good.

While I have no personal experience. They can burn out faster compared to a normal SSD.

Was your SSD trim equipped? And, what generation was it?

I've never owned anything besides a standard HDD. Never seen the need, really. I reboot my computer so infrequently, I don't really think it's worth the price difference. Besides, I have a nearly full (8GB shy) 320GB onboard drive. If I switched to SSD that capacity would be severely diminished. And I value my media - external drives won't do.

Sorry I can't offer an informed opinion on SSDs, I honestly know next to nothing about them, besides what the acronym stands for.

For those that don't know, they're talking about solid-state drives, a type of memory storage somewhere between RAM and a traditional hard drive. SSDs are basically large arrays of flash memory, except they won't lose stored data if you lose power suddenly.

I had the OCZ Vertex 2, it did have Trim support and I'd installed Windows in AHCI.

If you put one in your laptop it'll seriously feel like you just replaced it with a newer model. I had a MacBook Pro that I'd hardly ever used in the 5(now 6) years I'd had it. It was so unbearably painful to use. When I moved here to Germany, I stuck my SSD inside it and it turned into a whole new beast. I must say, beast is still a massive overstatement, but you can't really appreciate it until you've tried it then gone back to standard drives.
