I think that $1000 is a huge sum of money, especially if you do not have a job / are a student. It can help pay rent, buy school books, pay school fees etc.
What does $1000 mean to you?

That's about 2 1/2 months of rent for me.
If I didn't spend it on rent/bills/debts then I would make a down payment on a car.

The local economy here isn't very strong, work is seasonal. My income is around $900~$1100 per month.
So figure $450 for rent, $150 for electric, $85 for internet, $25 for water, $50 for cell phone, and then there are variable expenses; food varies pending what is needed (figure $50-$100 per month), as does petrol fuel (gasoline; $50~$100 there). So my expenses before any splurges is $860-$960. I'm a smoker that runs me about another $100 a month.
Then there is the local economy, typically most jobs are seasonal. 3-4 months of down time every single year. So debt adds up, currently owe my landlord 4-5 months back rent.
