It's not help getting people into college, it's helping them save money
Pretty sure you have to prove you can afford college before getting into college.

Not if you get full rides into college...

Pretty sure you have to prove you can afford college before getting into college.
In the USA, you receive your acceptance letter before you prove you can attend the college. If you fail to provide the funding, they simply don't let you take your classes.
Not if you get full rides into college...
Getting a full ride into college would assume that you can pay for the college that you got accepted into, which would prove Sweeney's statement correct.
or help with FAFSA and crap like that.
. I just finished my FAFSA, they didn't give me anything last year, because I went to a community college, well now I'm going to a University...so they better give me something. I've been looking at a million scholarships too.
I'm not so sure why you need help with FAFSA. You just type in your information and press send and hope you get all kinds of awesome stuff.
As for other scholarships. Fastweb.com seems to be the best, unless anyone knows of a better site.

Student Loans cannot be forgiven if filled bankruptcy so best to stay away from them.
Or spend responsibly and don't file bankruptcy...

I know I sure as hell didn't.
I got lucky because my field of study is linked with environmental causes and I get very good grades, so various organizations throw cash at me relatively often. For a field that I've been told is useless and is going to get me nowhere in life it's been very good to me.
That said, I think typically your best bet is to figure out what you want to study and then try to find specific scholarships related to that subject. Then you can forego all the bullshit like writing essays about how great Ayn Rand is.

Word.
On a related note, tuition is too damn high. I'm getting $22k a year from my university and it's hardly half tuition (the remainder is filled by other scholarships and loans).

People really need to realize that:
- College is OPTIONAL
- College degrees are not necessary to get a "decent" or "respectable" job
- Trade schools and apprenticeships are not shameful

Another option is simply not going to college at all, or not going to college directly out of highschool. I wish that someone had told me that years ago, because it would've prevented a lot of wasted time and money.

Weird, because if you want a job as a Systems Administrator, they don't even give you an interview or read the rest of the resume if it doesn't have a college degree on it. They don't give a fuck about the rest if it doesn't say that on it.

Being a sysadmin isn't the only respectable job in existence, now, is it?
Any respectable job in my career field wants a college degree....
Are you saying I should work in a field that I don't like just so I can go to college?
And, its non-optional for anyone who wants to be a sysadmin, which makes your statement "Its optional" invalid. For some people it is optional, but for hundreds of thousands, its non optional. I would love to see an engineer, physicist, or chemist get a job without a degree.

If there is a class that you can take online where the subject is something you don't stress yourself over with, take it. Online classes tend to be cheaper especially if you are paying out of state tuition. Save a couple of hundreds. If you are near campus and wish to attend the course you can probably do that, but make sure it is a large size class. Usually auditorium style lectures work for this.
Also community college transferring saves some money. Just be sure you know which school and program you want to get into to save some time and money. That way you know what you need to take and know what can be transferred over.
Community college tends to have scholarships that are relatively easy to get. Apply to all the ones that you are eligible for.

Umm... Do you know what a "full ride" is? I ask because your statement is not true... Once you are accepted into a university and have completed your FAFSA, you are made a financial aid award. If the award is 100% of your tuition (A.K.A. a "Full-Ride") then clearly they didn't assume that you could pay for your tuition. In fact, it would assume that they understand that you can't pay ANY of your tuition...Getting a full ride into college would assume that you can pay for the college that you got accepted into, which would prove Sweeney's statement correct.
P.s. The American education system sucks! Even though I am in no way dependent upon my family, my ability to receive financial aid is still determined based upon the combination of my income and my parents income until I turn 24 (next year.) So even though last year I only made about 27000, I was offered $0 in tuition assistance this year on a $20000/year program because they included my mother and my stepfathers income into the equation. What kind of stupid bullshit is that? Oh well, another year out of school I suppose. =/
P.p.s. They did offer me student loans... I was offered $7,000 in student loans. Oh yeah, because I just so happen to have the other 50% of my income from last year even though I barely made enough to get by and received no government aid. Thanks...

Everyone knows that...heck I think even the government knows that.

Now that's bullshit on their part. I mean honestly, they can't even choke up like 2 grand? I know 2 grand into a 20k/year is nothing, but it's still 2 grand, you know?

I'm not sure many of the people here deserve any help getting into college.

I'm white, can't get a scholarship.
This is very, very true for FASFA.

Also, I think FAFSA is a first come first serve program. But hopefully you get some cash.
