Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was charged on Thursday with murdering his girlfriend.

What an idiot. I hated him all throughout the 2012 Olympics and now there's even less reason to like him. They kept painting him like a hero but all I could think was "This guy sucks". Hopefully the world agrees with me now.

Makes gun-owners look bad. Don't pull the trigger before identifying the target.

Eh, what difference does one more gun owner make to the impression of gun owners?

I love the title change. Thank you!

He meant to kill her. He put 4 bullets in her. If I was in the bathroom and thought my home was being invaded and I shot once and heard my brother howl in pain, I'd stop at the one.

The title made me think it was a topic about tongue twisters.

I am disappoint.

Justifiable use is very rarely the top story on news sites. This is. One of the common arguments against the right to own firearms is how much more likely you are to kill a family member than an attacker. This example sadly supports that argument.

Huh? He's not American...What are you talking about?

4-bullets does indeed mean he "meant to kill." The question is whether he meant to kill "an attacker" or his girl. A responsible gun-owner would make sure they knew the difference.

If I was woken up in the middle of the night and saw that my girlfriend wasn't in bed the first thing I would assume is that the person doing the disturbing is her rather than an intruder...

If you think it's an intruder, you don't stop and listen after firing the first shot.

Apparently he shot through the bathroom door so that could go some way to explaining why he couldn't identify the person he was shooting at. I'm not sure why he thought intruders broke in to use his bathroom though and why he felt that using his bathroom meant they deserved to be shot 4 times. :/

Allegedly a bloodied cricket bat was found in his home too. So you shoot 'em 4 times and just to make sure you might as well wack 'em just in case they ain't dead, i guess you don't stop to see what the hell you're beating on too right?

So you pretty clearly ignored the multiple posts I've made where I said you don't shoot something until you've identified what it is? This idiot thought he'd identified an intruder and once you make that decision, you shoot to kill.

I'd be curious whether he could have gotten himself against a wall somewhere with a clean line of sight to the door. For him to shoot through the door, he'd have to have convinced himself that the person in the bathroom might shoot him through the door before he could identify them. Just a weird situation all around.

Not sure how the legal system works in South Africa but they'd have an interesting time proving murder here in the US without evidence that it was pre-meditated & he had a good motive. There's no way he won't end up doing time but there are quite a few things with which he could be charged.

I suspect if the cricket bat thing is accurate then that could tip it towards being murder. Definitely a weird one though and we'll have to wait until more information comes out about it.

According to Medupe Simasiku, a member of the national prosecuting authority, the alleged leaks do not necessarily affect the court case as "the evidence [published] might be wrong".

Considering how broadsheets like The Guardian and The Independent have cited 'sources close to the investigation' for this info, it looks like we gotta wait until the bloodied bat is confirmed as a legitimate piece of information by official sources.

You, not the Paralympian.

Obviously he intended to kill the person. You don't fire four times to scare someone out of your home. You don't fire at all to scare someone. Simply pointing a gun at them should suffice. Even assuming the intruder is armed, the guy had his drawn and ready - the intruder didn't stand a chance unless he regularly sits on the john with his gun pointed at the door.

Of course this is all moot because he didn't take the time to find out whether it really was an intruder, or simply someone that lived with him.

"South Africa has some of the world's highest rates of violent crime, and many home owners have weapons to defend themselves against intruders, although Pistorius's complex is surrounded by a three-meter high wall and electric fence." Reuters

Here's something I'm pondering...if I want to make a murder look like self-defense, would I shoot the person once or 4 times.

You're assuming there was a conscious motive. It's far more likely that this was a crime of passion.

I also read that the police had been called out a few times previously because of domestics - and it's not as if this is over a long period because they had only been dating for a few a months so I think he definitely had some violent tendencies.

He already got bail and of course he'll be running, he's probably going to carry on training or he'd get pretty unfit.
