How can I download my Reader data?

Google Reader will be retired on July 1, 2013. If you'd like to download a copy of all your Reader data before then, you can do so through Google Takeout. You'll receive your subscription data in an XML file, and the following information will be downloaded as JSON files:

  •
  • List of people that you follow
  •
  • List of people that follow you
  •
  • Items you have starred
  •
  • Items you have liked
  •
  • Items you have shared
  •
  • Items shared by people you follow
  •
  • Notes you have created
  •
  • Items with comments
  •

Click here to start downloading your Reader data from Takeout. Once downloaded, your subscription data should be easily transferrable to another product, where you can continue to keep up with your online reading.

I have 728 subscriptions. How can they do this to me?

It's only 2.1 mb for my xml, but still.

What do you use? Do you know how exactly to transfer from a reader to another?

(I have ~750 starred items too)

Also they used the less common form of 'transferable.' Now I'm  just being bitter.

Did Google at least give a reason for retiring the feed reader?

I don't know. I'm too distraught to check.

Lack of usage seems to be the reason.  :(

Yes, but really the reason is that they don't want to spend any more money on a product that doesn't make them as much money as they could be making elsewhere. There are support costs to every product and it doesn't make sense for them to support something that isn't generating a return on investment.

That said, I'm a bit disappointed too.

Couldn't you two have er, glanced away from your screens, looked at each other in person and ask this question?

Yeah, I think they did away with picnik and Sketchup last year too. And seems like Notebook and SideWiki the year before. (Maybe two years ago?)

If I could see through walls and across town, yes. Definitely. I also would have asked him to look.

My apologies, I just assumed since you two had a kid together, you'd also be living together. That, and if you were at work, you wouldn't be a time thief by hopping on to Neocodex.

My mistake.

and Sketchup

They sold SketchUp last year but the best thing Google did was to make that free after they bought it and the new owner seems to want to continue that so yay.

I use Opera's built in RSS reader! It's actually really nice and simple, and doesn't add any bloat ^^ I dunno if that feature is gonna be around when it becomes a Chromium skin/probably version 13 or at least later on this year D:

I'm pretty sure you can just import your feeds and stuff~

Mmmnn, it has its ups and downs :0 Compared to Chrome it generally uses a lot less RAM and is way more customisable (just look around opera:config, shift + F12 and ctrl + F12), and despite what people say 9/10 times it renders pages just fine! But you are gonna run into problems occasionally since web developers have started making their pages just for Chrome and don't give a shit about other browsers! You should give it a test run and see if you like it, and turn off automatic updates ^^ <3
