Anyone here play/collect? I'm a pretty intense follower of Magic. I started playing in 1999 {I was what, 7?} and played with a majority of Apocalypse, 7th/8th edition and Odyssey cards. I learned how to play by some generous supervisors at the day care I stayed at before my parents came to pick me up. Adventure Club, if you will. I got all the other girls to play after I learned the basic rules.

 

I took a break after the whole "no more cards in school thing" that MTG and the new Yugioh created. Came back after my mom let me pick up an Issue of Inquest that had Darksteel deck reviews. Couldn't play as much as I wanted to because "fuck cards need vidya" stage was in full force. My Gamecube is still my best friend.

 

Got really interested in the original City of Guilds block: guilds, feuds, eat my money. Right as Coldsnap was releasing, I lost interest. I just now came back, probably at the end of Magic 2012's cycle. I was a bit eh on planeswalkers aside from Jace. Cliched but I am a traditional blue player. Got caught up in the last half decade's worth of standard and current metagame. List of unopened product I purchased in the last year:

• All 3 premium decks: Gravborn, Fire/Lightning, and Slivers {just recently for $30!!!!}
• 2 RTR boxes, 1 fat pack
• 1 Scars of MIrrodin box
• Venser v Koth, Ajani and Nicol Bolas
• 2012 Planechase at $20 retail prices
• at least 100 random booster packs from standard sets

Got a ton of singles I haven't had the money to buy until now. I also bought a full set of Avacyn Restored for $100 off Ebay a few months ago. I am currently working on refining my casual Reanimator deck. I just got my 4th Graveborn Exhume for 15c the other day.

 

Anyways, who's excited for Dragon's Maze? I like smaller sets, and am looking forward to the spoiled cards.

I've been clean for many years. Can't afford it (no money nor time) anymore. It was a fun ride while it lasted.

I've never played properly - had a guy try and teach me when I was a kid, but yeah.

I taught my partner how to play! He's now more obsessed than I am. Fortunately for me, I've never got any stigma from being female and teaching a guy how to play Magic.

 

One thing I tell people who are interested in learning the game is to use cards that are fun for you. It shouldn't have to be all serious. Learning the rules using cards that are fun to play is a lot easier and more engaging. Learn the gameplay rules before you learn how to build a competitive deck. Have someone tell you about the different formats. Each uses different cards from different sets. Standard is the most popular and uses the newest cards. Modern is slowly gaining popularity.

 

For me, I love watching the competitive/professional Magic scene, it's like sports for nerds. But now I mainly collect older cards I can afford now and buy the occasional new product.

 

Lastly, everyone will tell you that now is the best time for new players to get into Magic, because they are catering to you. For old farts like me, we can see the differences in gameplay styles/metagames from 5 years ago and the kinds we see now. For you, it really is a great time to get into Magic, so get to it!! ;D

 

Magic is expensive, but it's just like any other hobby and requires investment. But damn, is it fun. Also, for the whole being poor thing, there's a format called Pauper that only uses commons and uncommons, which are retarded cheap, so no excuse not to play! Just research and learn, and the fun will be rewarding as hell!

Sure thing. I first started around 1997 or 1998 with Portal/Portal 2nd Age and quickly moved to Fifth and Sixth Edition. Played quite intesively through Urza block until 2002/2003 Onslaught Block, when I went into hiatus. Played on and off. My second more intense 6 month period was around summer/fall 2011 with Scars of Mirrodin and Innistrad, this time it was only with 3rd party online servers, no money involved but eventually I quit again due to time constraints.

 

Recurring Nightmare / Survival of the Fittest and later Birthing Pod / Graveyard manipulation decks remain my favourite.

If you played during Urza's Saga I am very jealous. Quite a few money rares in that one. Show and Tell, Yawgmoth's Will, and most importantly Gaea's Cradle.

 

I have a casual reanimator deck made up of mostly cards from Graveborn and some power mythics/rares.
