It actually also shows how you are way ahead of others when people at that time are still figuring out how to participate in those events properly. A retired war avatar with the relevant highest rank trophy is the best combination. For example, you get Darigan Darkling with Darigan Dark Lord trophy.
Well, I have the Darigan Darkling avvie, and I sure as hell did not achieve the highest war rank all the way back then...

The Lucky Streak is something I always envy, but you never know if the player got it on the first try or on the 56894747474 try. The NT Star however always requires the same amount of work and dedication, and it's something I truly admire!

I think the stamp ones are have the most status, as they're not based on luck. Plus, for some of them in particular it can take ages to hunt down the rare stamps which requires a lot of commitment. The Happy Valley (or whatever) one is the best looking in my opinion.

In my opinion it's the stamp avvies and the neopian times ones, both the writer and the star avvies. It's obvious why the stamp avvies is a status symbol, they're bloody expensive to complete. I've finished the Battledome one except for the Battle Slices Stamp and most of the SV one except the 2 most expensive stamps. It's highly unlikely I'll ever be able to afford it. Blergh.
The Neopian Times avvies require hard work and a pinch of luck. (Determination too)
I also think the Caption Contest avvie is sort of a status symbol cause you have to win a hundredth CC. It's hard as the entries spike whenever this occurs. Winning the CC is more like winning a popularity contest as you can see the popular kids rubbing it up on the Neoboards for votes all the time. (hence I've never won)

There's a few avvies you have to spend at least 1 million 
I have to agree about the NT ones.
Props to whoever is creative and dedicated enough to get that.
They must have a stack of rejected entries that is a lot more than the 10 accepted ones.

Stamp avatars for sure, most albums cost as much as a suap

I personally think the Caption Contest ones and the NT ones are the most prestigious. They take real skill and effort to obtain, as opposed to something that just takes buying something to obtain.

No one is going to say the Kad one? I thought that was tough to get but maybe I was doing it all wrong 
I agree with the Lucky Streak, NT and Caption Contest avvies. It's near impossible to get the CC one because it only comes about once every two years I believe.

The abundance of kad autofeeders undermines the exclusivity of the avatar, I'm afraid

the actual frequency for CC is higher
There are other languages to enter in
the English one has a lot of competition
and it is the one people are more aware of
the other languages just depends on if you can get accepted
but still hard

I agree with several posters here.
I think retired ones are huge status indicators to me. I see them and I am like AHHH I WANT....
I think stamp collector avs are also - due to the amount of NP...
and HT-Richest - because you basically are saying -- yeah I wasted 10 mil - no biggie.

I would say Stamp avatars would be very high on my list. For the older stamps they're getting harder and harder to find. I only know of one Coltzan Stamp that's currently for sale. Try finding a Petpets Stamp up for sale... 
Just to name one.
Lucky Streak is also very high on my list.
HT richest isn't that big of a deal.
suap may become rare again I know several owners that just won't lend. mspp was rare, but now its way to common sadly.
