The Prime Minister started plans today to block children's access to pornography and child porn.

Also

Four of the biggest Internet service providers in the UK -- TalkTalk, Virgin, Sky and BT -- have agreed after negotiations to enable home network filters that block pornography by default.

These filters can be turned off by someone over the age of 18.

Is this a bad or a good thing? Whose responsibility is it to monitor the internet?  Is this the first step toward mass blockings of sites in the UK?

Nice to see that our government has their priorities right. When we have a shit economy, terrorists up the wazoo, civil war in Syria, Iran trying to get nuclear weaponry, Cuba sending weapons to North Korea and Tasmanian devils with that weird face cancer thingy, our government decides that children potentially seeing a person's pee pee on the internet (apparently it's not parental responsibility now) is a step too far.

Morals aside, how can they truly block pornography for people under 18? At this generation, our teenagers are more tech saavy than we believe them to be and they can bypass easy filters with a few clicks. For crying out loud, I've seen 6 year olds with Iphone 5's connected to at least 5 social networking sites and this one kid (around 8 or 9) jailbreaked an iphone all by himself to make a ROM work on his phone. If they can do that much, finding information to bypass a filter would be easy.

On top of that the pron providers finding easy ways to avoid the filters. I can see it now: A kid sees a link saying "new Pokemon X and Y Pokemon revealed" and it redirects the user to photos of blowjobs under the name "yvetal.jpeg", "sylveon.gif", and "metapod.png". What truly will surprise me is how will they truly block all the easily accessed tumblr and google porn?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this is a little dumb.

The other side of this would be all the things I would think that would be blocked that are legit. "new Pokemon X and Y revealed" X+reveal=block sites?

But then how will they learn about sex?

The thing that I'll be interested in knowing is what happens to the list of people who choose to opt-in to receive porn?

I don't think they bank on it working, to be honest. There's like a million porn sites out there, not to mention hentai, doujunshi sites, livejournal, 4chan... also erotica sites (fanfiction comes to mind)

It's more of a symbolic move, I believe. Singapore does it too (block certain porn sites) but it's not like that actually makes a difference cause you can always just hop on another site and fap/schlick there.

block children's access to [...] child porn.

How come no one talked about the child porn? That's definitely the right thing to do and they should block it for >18 as well

The child porn will be blocked for everyone, I think. I misread it. He wants there to be a list of words and phrases that turn up no results at all... but even then, how will people get child porn news? Or research things?

I agree that child porn should be taken care of, but to default all block porn? That's a waste of resources and time.

ISPs already block child porn sites I believe but they can't do anything about the underground ones or ones hidden within Tor etc, not even the new measures will be able to do anything about those. Personally I think it's just a moral thing but dressed up as protecting children.

Because porn is BAD guys. BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD.

Masturbation, BAD

Sex, BAD

Fetishes, BAD

Jesus Christ. As if sex ed isn't awkward enough, they're making it even worse by demonising the idea of porn. I can understand banning/blocking pornography in which a third party is exploited/harmed (eg. child porn, real life bestiality, etc), but this only serves to make what is essentially a normal and healthy part of growing up into something that's essentially illegal.

Since when watching porn become a normal and healthy part of growing up? There's plenty of sexual education and biology textbooks that is enough for children to be educated about sex and reproduction. Pornography is banned on many sites and in many countries anyway.

And you'll notice that those sex ed textbooks say that it's okay to watch porn and masturbate. That it's natural.

You'll also notice that pretty much everybody does it. That is the definition of normal.

Since pornography was commercialised.

Before the internet kids would search every nook and cranny for a page or two of Playboy or Razzle.

This isn't about sex education, it's about personal fulfilment, enjoyment, body exploration and self-esteem.
