Yes, many times on multiple accounts. Just keep discarding crap.

I had to discard ~3000 items to get it, so it's probably easiest if you collect all your junk items together first and discard them all at once.

i got the avatar by discarding 7000 broken fishing poles lol. been collecting them for almost a week.
