I can't open things like paint, notepad, wordpad, etc and I have no idea why. I also appear to not be using google correctly, because it's not being helpful. Any suggestions?

Any errors? What happens if you type notepad.exe into a run window?

For opening those things, no errors. It just never happens. Run window doesn't work and the win 8 search feature doesn't work. crtl+alt+delete goes to an error message saying that ctrl+alt+delete doesn't work.

Either run as admin (sounds like even that isn't working for you) so try to reinstall win 8/update. If you haven't updated in a while it may possibly fix it. (I have win 8 and it works fine for me).

Hint: Uninstall Windows8 and install Windows 7. Every single computer problem = fixed.

Am I the only person who hasn't had any problem with Windows 8?

(if only my school would take that advice, some of the computers are still running Windows XP. They need to upgrade to either 8 or 7, though they'd go with 7).

I just hate the compatibility issues as well as the whole giant boxes all over my screen shit. It's unnecessary and seems like it's made for a pre-schooler.

The operating system doesn't do what I need and most of it's features are unnecessary.

I'm guessing you didn't upgrade to Win7 as soon as it came out, and if you did, you don't remember how awful it was in many aspects. Software gets patched. no one is forcing you to upgrade. Yes, it was built to be accessible to unexperienced users. Win8 is pretty good.

You can turn all that off.

I hated it at first, but now I genuinely enjoy it.
