Chances are, most of us have had a roommate or may have one in the future! Let me tell you, it's not always easy to live with someone - whether they are your best friend or someone you don't even know. There are two things I know to be true: it's hard to be friends with your roommate, and hard to be roommates with your friend.

I wrote out my horror story, but I just made it a blog... cause length. You can read it here if you're interested:

http://www.neocodex....e-horror-story/

Now, tell me your roommate horror stories!

I had a roommate that was a neo nazi that told me on a daily basis that he wanted to "hang the blacks and burn the chinks", and even though he hated the Japanese, he really loved their pornographic animations and would constantly tell me about all of this.

Having Japanese related hobbies and being friends with a dark skinned individual, I did not take much of this kindly.

I live with a fucking degenerate. He leaves his shit everywhere, gets high every day and he's so lazy he even pays a cleaner to come over every other week. The guy spends hours and hours on his laptop... I think he's got a girlfriend but he never leaves the house so I don't know how that works. I pay all the fucking bills and this guy just spends his time in the lounge smoking weed and listening to fucking rap music. He's white.

I live alone.

When I first graduated, I moved 4 hours away from my family into a really awesome house. My cousin/best childhood friend convinced me to go, she was my roommate. I paid for both of our u-hauls to move there, then when we got there she informed me she had no money. So the next few months I paid rent, bought groceries, all the expenses you pay for when you live on your own, from my own pocket. They were savings I had put away for emergencies and money I had received for graduation. She was supposed to be looking for jobs but sat at home smoking weed all day (which she was using my money to buy). I was struggling to find work because we lived in a French community and my French wasn't very good at the time. I could understand and read French, but I couldn't speak it fast enough to answer questions with customers. I received multiple call backs but every single potential employer was disappointed to find out I wasn't bilingual. My cousin IS bilingual but she didn't actually APPLY anywhere. On top of paying for everything, I was spending all day every day cleaning up after her and her friends who she would invite over to party. These "friends" had put holes in my walls, broken furniture, eaten our food, and the best part? Two of them got drunk and vomited all over my spare bedroom. I mean EVERYWHERE. I didn't even know until a few DAYS later when I went downstairs and the smell was unbearable. I had to clean it up myself. Despite the fact that I was paying for everything, my bedroom was unfinished and in the basement while she had the gorgeous master bedroom upstairs. When I finally decided to leave it was because I was running out of money, starving, and sick of living with her. The day I was leaving she got a job, but I said fuck it and left her on her own anyway.

Our relationship is shit now. The end.

People that frequent TC will be all too familiar with my situations...

My roommate is a pretty cool guy, however; he is used to the world revolving around him and I don't play that game. He is an only child and is used to having his mommy and daddy do EVERYTHING for him. They bought him a BMW, which he wrecked, then bought him another one...which he wrecked, and finally bought him a 2012 Tacoma, which he surprisingly still has. Due to him being a spoiled child, he now expects me to be his surrogate mommy and daddy; homie don't play that (well I actually do...because if I didn't do the chores, nothing would get done around here). He washes the dishes MAYBE once every two weeks, and he only washes his dishes. When I wash the dishes, I do ALL of them because I like to consider myself a grown-up (sometimes). I buy his dog food, I bought his dog her $100 kennel,  I took his dog to the vet because he wasn't taking care of her properly. Here's the part that really kills me - he is a raging alcoholic and worries about getting drunk every night rather than his responsibilities. He doesn't give me half the money for the our cable/internet bill on time, I have to beg him for weeks to give it to me. His excuse is "I have no money", but he can go to the store and buy a 30-rack of beer three times a week...tell me how THAT makes any sense. Recently he's gotten a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charge against him when he tried to come back onto base, this looks bad on me and threatens my career because I'm a bad 'wingman'. This passed Saturday, him and his drinking buddy drove around Arkansas getting a few drinks at every bar they saw. They left at 5pm and didn't return until 3am the next day, and were drunkenly driving that whole time. This all went on after a huge ice storm hit my area. His irresponsibility and lack of maturity puts both of our careers on the line, and the lives of him and everyone around him in danger.

Oh...and my roommate has a best friend who looks like the typical camo-wearing douchebag with a backwards hat on...and he cries when I tell him he looks like a douche. Oh and this idiot gets drunk and howls at the moon...in my house. I hate my life here.

TLDR: My cousin has shitty taste in women.

When I first went to college i lived with my cousin and her first girlfriend Sherray. Her first girlfriend was a sociopath. She would take ecstasy every day and drink and since she was high she'd want to party. She would invite everyone to our house because she's the type of person who would make friends with everyone, even strange ass methheads. So I'm trying to study and she's constantly partying. My cousin and her had a strained relationship because the girl was always fucking high and didn't know how to control herself. My cousin was tired of babysitting her. Sherray even had a party with a ton of freshmen which is the worst thing to do because fucking freshmen just got out of their parent's house, just started drinking and dont know how to handle their shit. But Sherray is the type of person who will pressure you to drink more and do more drugs until youre basically dead.

I wanted NO part of this so I asked my friend Ericka to let me hang out at her place. When I got back those freshmen fucked up our apartment, someone stole some of my towels from me out of my room. They puked all over Sherray and my cousin's bathroom and the cops were called. We got a note from our landlord saying that if these parties continue theyre going to evict us. Finally shit hit the fan when my cousin caught Sherray, Sherray's sister, and 2 other freshmen girls in their bed. My cousin flipped out and started putting all her shit outside of the apartment. Sherray called the cops and when they came my cousin asked the cop "how would you feel if you came home from a hard day's work and found your wife in bed with another man?" the cop said hed be pissed the fuck off so they told Sherray and her sister that they had to go somewhere else for the night.

So Sherray decided to get back at us by waiting until I was at school and my cousin was at work and she was going to bring a fucking UHaul and take everything. Including shit that didn't belong to her like our cat, our dishes, and my cousin's furniture that she bought. Luckily I decided to ditch class and come home early and caught her in the middle of the act. She still had most of the truck filled up but I grabbed the cat and went into my room and called the cops because I saw a lot of my cousin's stuff on that truck. Sherray just left and the cops took forever to get there. When we talked to the cops the cops said if you're in a relationship for over a year everything in the house becomes community property unless the person can prove they bought the item with receipts. Since sherray only took my cousin's stuff and didn't take any of my stuff she didn't commit any crime.

So we had to get our stuff back. Sherray ended up on her own sister's shitlist for peer pressuring her into taking ecstasy and then leaving her with 2 guys who tried to have sex with her (her sister is a lesbian too, so that's pretty fn rude) so her sister told us that she was going to be out all night and where she was going to be. She also gave us her new address. We got my friend K and he climbed her balcony and she leaves the sliding door open all the time so he just walked in and unlocked the door. We took all my cousin's stuff back and my cousin bleached her clothes and we left. Since she could never prove that we did it nothing ever happened.

Then my cousin manages to find ANOTHER fucking alcoholic we call Bernie. She's a former meth addict but she doesn't do meth anymore but the girl is psycho. It's really crazy because when shes sober she's calm, nice, always wants to be on everyone's good side but when she's drunk she's a monster. One time my cousin had an ex girlfriend visit because they're still friends. They hadn't been together for over 3 years and Bernie freaked out. She got wasted and started throwing shit around the room, she put holes in the walls, she even broke a mirror and tried to use the shards of glass to slit her wrists. We had to call the cops and put her on psychiatric hold until my cousin picked her up.

After the first time I managed to forgive her because she said that she's going to stop drinking but she never did. She kept drinking, she kept throwing fits, even one time she hit my cousin. I tried to talk to my cousin and tell her that this girl needs to go, even though it doesn't happen all the time it shouldn't be happening at all. That's when Bernie decided that I needed to go. She started finding everything wrong with me saying I don't wash the dishes enough even though I was rarely home so I didn't even cook let alone have dishes to wash. She complained about the way I kept MY room. It's my room, I don't have to keep it organized like you like it if it's my fucking space. She complained that I would bring my boyfriend over and freaked out at me when I told her if she has a problem with my boyfriend she can go swallow her strap on. But my cousin agreed with her and they both ganged up against me so they got their own place and now I'm here with my aunt and we get along so I'm happy.

My current roommate does a lot of things that irritate me so this is a good opportunity to get them off my chest:

  • The Mouth Noise. I live in a college dorm, so we're sharing a shitty 200 sq.ft. room. I'm not in there too often anyways, so whatever. But he has a habit of bringing back various disgusting foods (THEY ALWAYS INCLUDE RANCH FUCKING DRESSING) and eating them loudly enough to hear while wearing headphones and listening to music at full volume. It's this revolting smacking and chewing noise that's literally bad enough that I have to leave the room. He can't even drink a beverage without making conspicuous gulping noises, then retching a bit. WHY WERE YOU NEVER TAUGHT HOW TO EAT?? I'm already kind of sensitive to eating noises, but The Mouth Noise is on another plane. Out of all the things I'll list, this is by far the worst.
  • The judgment. He's a fairly prudish/conservative Jew. Which is cool, by all means go sing Hanukkah songs I don't give a shit. But the snide comments and disappointed looks whenever I so much as have a single drink get old. Or when he patronizingly texts me to "see if I'm okay" whenever I go out on weekends. The other day I was talking about how excited for Christmas I am (because fuck yeah xmas and I just went to the National Christmas Tree lightning), he went on an extended rant about how the National Christmas Tree is a violation of the first amendment and is disrespectful to Jews etc. Bitch you're just jealous I got to see Mariah Carey.
  • The girlfriend. His girlfriend is a sweet girl on her own. But when they're together, they descend into a bizarre combination of old married couple and infants. The perpetual baby talk, weird caressing in public, the spooning and watching fucking SEINFELD while I'm trying to study. They also have a habit of whining to each other (still in baby talk), and then asking me for affirmation if I'm around.
  • The odor. He does his laundry once every month, or so.
  • The phone calls. He calls/skypes his family at late hours (he's from CA, we live in DC) in the room, and proceeds to talk about inane geography trivia with his father until I have to tell him to shut the fuck up because I'm trying to sleep.

I could go on, but I'm too angry and I have work to do.

When I first graduated, I moved 4 hours away from my family into a really awesome house. My cousin/best childhood friend convinced me to go, she was my roommate. I would do the same. Hence I judge you a lot.

Anyway, I've only lived with my family but my sister and I are currently looking at houses since she recently graduated and is now employed as a full-time pharmacist. I constantly worry that my sister and I (who are basically best friends) will have an extremely strained relationship if we moved in together. She is often lazy but I'm poor. She agreed to pay for the majority of rent if I took care of the house. But that kinda makes me feel like I'd be a maid and I know one day it'll become "WHO pays for all the rent? This is MY house. You just live here" which would probably cause me to hate her forever.

Hasn't happened yet, but I'll complain about how shitty it'll be already .

Your ego was shielding you from reality. It's a frustrating thing to experience, and a sad thing to witness as you may have found out already :p

It wasn't really my ego.
I wasn't too proud to say anything, I was too insecure and afraid to lose my friend if I said the wrong thing.
I was a major doormat back then, people always took advantage of me.

Oh man. That would annoy me so much. My current roommate talks really loud (but she's nice to me and she'll never be as bad as the bitches so I put up with it). I can only imagine what gross, loud eating sounds like. Ick.
