Since a common concern seems to be the clutter, you could have the awards go onto the persons profile instead of the sidebar. That way there is plenty of room to fit all the awards a person earns and it doesn't make the threads look cluttered to some. It would be really nice if in the profile preview (whatever the thing is called that shows up when you hover over the person name) had a line where you could see the awards.
What kind of forum awards do you want, if any?

For everyone interested, this is the mod that we would be using to put it in place if there is enough people who think it's a good idea: http://community.inv...-awards-system/
It's quite a nice incentive system that I believe can be a lot of fun and bring activity to the forum in ways that we haven't seen before (or at least, for a long time). There are so many possibilities for different award tiers.
I think the 20x20 icons would be a good start.

Here is an example of how it would look on the sidebar AND in user profile fields.

Oo that sidebar's purdy. I really like that it brings a great deal of diversity to the sidebar.

I really hate the 'awards bar', it's really overdone and there's no need for a big black line to surround all of the awards.
I think it would be much better if we could mod it to look like this:
They seem a lot less intrusive that way, and simplicity is something everybody is after I think. You can hover to see the name of the award, and click any to be brought to a list of that user's awards on their profile.
Thanks to some smart margining on IPB's side, it looks great even when you have rows and rows of awards:
Technically this is really easy to achieve as well, IPB offers a "custom fields" part which is probably utilised by the mod you mentioned above @Strategist. It should be easy to modify.

The MT implementation looked exactly like Dan's mockups.

I love the idea of awarding site contributions and milestones in a tangible way. Incentive and motivation go a long way toward forum activity.
As to the question of whether it will spur people to post mountains of crap - people already do that.

Oh do they ever...
Also, I like Dan's mockups but I also like the example Strat posted. It makes no difference to me.

I don't mind how we do it either way I like both examples. Also, for the actual giving out of the awards, it can be a manual thing done by the mods, but I feel it would be best if we have a request system in place as well. This way, when people hit a certain 'milestone' for an award to be given out, they can bring attention to it for the mods to review/award.

I think this is the way it would have to be until there we have someone actively developing more forum features.
It's also really really important that the criteria is nailed down for each one of these awards.
None of this "based on staff members discretion". Concrete goals are way better than "oh, we might give you an award if we like you".

But secret awards would be fun too

Can we have a Not-Being-Dan award, please?
