So my friend and I were discussing movies and the movie Maleficient came up.

He said that he felt Maleficient was an objectively bad movie (over simplified, tried too hard to pander and evoke emotions) but he still loved it.

On the opposite side, he said that there are objectively good movies (good screen play, well directed and filmed) but he hates them. His example was Black Swan.

It got me thinking of movies that I love knowing full well they're pretty bad. Or some movies where I think "I can appreciate that this is a good movie, but I found it very boring"

I don't really have any movies off the top off my head, but:

Good movies that I disliked:

Brokeback Mountain

Bad movies that I like:

99% of musicals except Westside Story and Oliver! oh my lord

Share?

Edit: I realize the idea of "good" and "bad" are subjective for the most part. But I meant movies that you can appreciate why it's well reviewed, but maybe you just hate Hobbits.

Musicals! YAAAASSSS!!

"Good" movies I don't like:

The Notebook

A Walk To Remember

There are way too many "bad movies" I like, mostly b-rated horror films, The leprechaun series, Evil dead and Evil dead II (with bruce campbell), Army of darkness, etc. xD

I don't know if these would be considered "good" but:
My Sisters Keeper

500 days of Summer

Titanic

I pretty much hate chick-flicks no matter how "good" they may be. I spent the 2 or so hours of My Sisters Keeper waiting for the girl to die of cancer, which is why I won't see "The Fault in Our Stars" because I have a feeling I'd be doing the same thing. I had no idea what was going on in 500 days of Summer, they had this clock on the screen that was supposed to represent the days they'd been together, but it kept going forwards and backwards and never made any sense to me.

As fir Titanic, again I spend the time waiting for the ship to skink, and I'm still mad at Rose for not letting Jack on the board (Mythbusters did prove that it was plausible for her to let Jack up and they both would have lived.). I feel like it's been overhyped too, Di'Caprio didn't even get nominated for an Oscar in that movie.

Mhmm. I'm with your friend on Maleficent @Boggart I feel that the original character is the epitome of evil - without any redeeming qualities. But I still loved it and Angelina Jolie was seriously wicked (pardon the pun :p)

West Side Story is the only musical I like. :p

For terrible movies I appreciated, I liked the One Direction movie a lot...

I can't stand Thor, When Harry Met Sally, or The Hunger Games.

Oh and now that @Satsuki mentioned it - everyone that I've talked to has raved about the Fault in our Stars. It was cheesy and full of shit.

I have a feeling I wont like The Fault in our stars. I rarely ever go to the movies, because I feel like the past... 4-5 years have been pretty unimpressive.

West Side Story is a bad movie? Wtf.

Bad movies I love: Necromentia, All Hallows Eve, Autopsy, The Mist.

Good movies I hate: Titanic, awful movie. Every super-hero movie.

I can stand Thor, but Thor: The Dark World....It was "ok" I guess, not like how I would have liked to have seen it done. The reviews said that Jane (Natalie Portman) showed little to no emotion, and that Loki only seemed like a side character and they needed more of him.

I agree with both. Effects were great, story was good (in some parts), but otherwise it wasn't that great. I mean, Loki dies and Portman's character shows no sadness, not even a drop, while Chris's does (Thor). Then they just leave his body there. Yep, that shows you care for your brother, leave his body on a distant realm.

Oh I forgot to add: Iron Man 3

I spent at least 30 minutes+ (I don't remember the exact time, may be more or less) waiting for him to get in the dang Iron Man suit, and then got bored. I expect action within a reasonable amount of time, 30 minutes+ is a bit too slow for me.

I'm not saying it's a bad movie. Musicals are usually not seen as "of highest caliber". I just hate WSS. It's SO BORING.

My mom really likes Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and I couldn't stand it..apparently that's a good movie?

The best worst movie I've ever seen was Sharknado.

Good movies I hate:

Titanic

Hugo (I thought it was sooo stupid)

A few others that my boyfriend raved about but I fell asleep about halfway through

Bad Movies I love:

I loved a lot of those Disney movies growing up (and still rock out to soundtracks now and then).

I can't really think of anything off-hand since I'm not much of a movie person.

Movies you guys need to see if you haven't already:

The Intouchables (its in French, its good, it made me cry)

The Normal Heart

Uhm, excuse me. She wasn't invited to the party that everyone else in the kingdom was? Royalty, nobility, the gentry and even the fuckin' rabble were there, but not her? That's offensive. She had every right to be pissed off.

Now that I think about it, I hate most modern children's animations. They always have that sappy part where the main character is thinking about how sad they are while sad music plays and we're supposed to feel SORRY for them, but I just want them all to die. Hallelujah... hallelujah... shut the fuck up and get on with it.

Everyone always seems to like the Lion King, but I thought it was shit and I laughed as a child when Mufasa fell to his death. I was more annoyed than anything when Simba goes up and starts tuggin' on him, because he was just trampled to death and he's still in one piece? Get real. I wanted guts. I WANTED GUTS.

On the other hand, one of my favorite movies is Castaway which is notoriously boring. But I like looking at the ocean. I usually fast forward the first part, and then stop it when he gets rescued. I've watched it like 30 times.

Well I saw the topic and immediately thought of Titanic.  I'm always appalled when someone says they liked it.

Showgirls sucks, but I still love it, and I can't even explain why.
