The rumors are true: Microsoft is buying Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5 billion. And as we discovered this morning, Mojang founder Markus "Notch" Persson is leaving the company. As you can imagine, the PC Gamer team has some strong feelings about the acquisition, and the impact of Minecraft.

Well, that's quite a large sum of money! I'm in two minds about it at this stage and I really hope they don't fuck this up.

At least no one who has posted so far has been naive enough to expect Microsoft not to ruin it? :p

Grasping at straws for something positive here...

They're gonna f*ck it up, I know it. Just like they did with Rareware.

The difference is Rare was an established developer with a stack of critically good games behind them and people were expecting just as much after the buyout.

Mojang has well...Minecraft. A game that was made popular first by 4chan of all places. There isn't much to fuck up.

Not as much, but still plenty to fuck up.

How many players does minecraft have? I'd be willing to bet they have more satisfied players than Microsoft has ever had satisfied customers.

As of February there were 100m users of the PC version with 16.7m paying users currently (https://minecraft.net/stats).  That's not counting the XBox, PS3, or Pocket Edition players.

Is minecraft really worth all those billions? Everyone has already bought minecraft, there's not much room for expansion...

See Elindoril's first post in this thread.

According to minecraft.net:

In the last 24 hours, 8,568 people bought the game.

Looks to me like everyone hasn't already bought the game.  And at $27 a pop, that's over $230k today.

That and more. Dude young and old people play this thing. The market for these people could reap tons of dollars.

High risk, high reward situation IMHO. Really ballsy move on Microsofts part, but I think it will pay off!

Minecrafts popularity is through the roof...

My fiancee's really excited though, his argument being that Microsoft's brought out a shitton of good games in the likes of Age of Empires

The good thing is that because of the style of game and all the work already put into it by Mojang, players aren't really forced to kneel to what Microsoft might add to it. They're free to do their own thing like Codex is.

Wasn't as great when Nuts n Bolts came out. :p
