Where were all these teachers when I was in school? But in all seriousness, I feel like he knew what he was doing, and was probably the talk of the school. It's inappropriate to say the least, so I have no issue with her losing her job, but it is kind of silly to charge her if it was consensual. They charge juveniles as adults all the time when they commit crimes.

They were still there, they however didn't decide to prey on a student using their position as an educator of the state.

Its odd, because the story in the OP, if that happened in England it wouldn't be classed as rape, but the teacher wopuld likely still lose their job. College teachers here lose jobs for sleeping with pupils who are older than them in some cases, its crazy to me.

I guess it is wrong as the lad is under the age of consent in the country where it occurred, however I do have a slight problem with it being called rape but this may be because the age of consent here is 16 and I cannot get my head round comparing this lad to, for example a  naive 12 year old.

Also I find it quite funny when stories like this break and the guys are all like 'good on him' and stuff. Yet if it was the other way round and it was a male teacher sleeping with a student its all 'urgh pedo'

Wish that was my principal.

Sounds like a good time.

Funnily enough, SNL tackled this trend not too long ago:

I currently live in Indiana and we have an abnormal law on statutory rape if you are 15 you can mess with whoever as long as they are 15-18 if your 16 you can go up to 19 and then 17 is legal up to like 29 after that it's a free for all but to give my input on this I do think the teecher should have been smart enough not too but a 16 year old boy probably wanted it more maybe she should lose her job but i wouldn't give jail time

I wonder how many people who thought it was okay because it was a boy with a female teacher would change their tune if the genders were reversed.

Statutory rape isn't as bad as forcible rape, no, but it's still obviously someone in a position of power taking advantage of a minor in this situation. Sure, teenagers have bodily autonomy and can make decisions on who they have sex with, but if you condone a consensual teacher/student relationship, you're making it even harder for people to come forward when it isn't consensual and they're feeling pressured. The amount of boys/men who report being raped (be it violent, via coercion, etc) is incredibly low because of the stigma that surrounds male rape.

It's pretty depressing, actually. :/ IMO, a 16-year-old can choose to have sex with a 23-year-old, sure, but if the 23-year-old is their teacher they should know better than to do that, be it consensual or not.

I see no issue if it is consensual and by consensual I mean that they are pressured in no way and want to do it no madder if it's female or male.

I don't think it's just the age but the fact that she's in a position of power over him (not just in bed ;P)

As someone who graduated with a teaching degree, and had a hot senior in my FIRST class, let me chime in and say THIS. THIS.

Mental maturity aside, age of consent aside, a person in a position of power over another person (teacher, boss, etc) should not EVER fraternize with the person below them. Let them graduate, and then boink their brains out (still, if you get caught doing that, you can still get in trouble because people may assume you were boinking before they graduated). Of course some 16-18 year old students are attractive, it's nearly their peak breeding age! People get all icky when it's a male teacher, but it's the same either way. (And older teachers still have libidos, kthx.) But they also have responsibility, experience, and a LOT to lose. What about if they "break up"? HUGE risks to the teacher, since a student can hold that over your head. SO NOT WORTH IT.

I am shocked to see an earlier poster say that women cannot be charged with rape in the UK. That, seriously needs to be fixed. My deep condolences to the men/women in the UK that have been raped and have no one to turn to. :(

This. Personally, I think that if the student and the teacher wish to date, wait until the student is graduated! Then the issue of the the teacher "taking advantage" of the student doesn't come into play, and there's less to worry about (although this whole teacher student relationship even after graduation is still looked down upon).

As long as they're both adults, the way I see it is that they're both their own persons and are capable of making their own decisions. This speaks more towards an age difference between the two, though.

Yeah, I'm not surprised the teen said yes and went for the relationship, but if you're 23 you... Shouldn't be messing with 16 year olds.

Based on ages alone, there is nothing wrong with that.

I think it would be better to wait after graduation at least, but then again that's my opinion.

Obviously not appropriate, given the student-teacher thing, even if they are fairly close in ages. And yeah, if it's legally statutory rape, then well it iss.

Ethically-wise (instead of legally), I suppose a case can be made for positive benefits for early sexual awakening/experience. But. With one's teacher? Noott sure that is good ideaaa.
