I saw this article in the news the other day, and it seriously amazes (yet in no way surprises) me that this game has been spreading and growing like wildfire with so little advertising effort! What an ideal product from a business perspective. :)

It's probably because nobody thought consumers would go back in time and realise that pixels can be cool. Everyone was used to refined images and then they got bored. Then Minecraft comes out looking like something from the 80s and everybody jumps on it.
