On another forum I go on they have a debate league where it's 1v1 on certain topics and there's judges that judge them. The judges don't know who's debate they're reading and they pick which one is better. There would be different categories in the league and you sign up for which one you want to sign up for, you usually want to pick topics you're interested in...for example:

Sports League:

Futurama- Will debate MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, general sports happenings

Will not debate soccer, and "minor" sports

That is just an example of a sign up. Other categories would include politics, entertainment, history, religion, philosophy, etc.

If I get enough interest I will post more about this. So please post on here if you're interested. There would be "showing" a month, meaning a "show" with 4-6 debates in it. (1 from each league, or 2 from some depending how many are signed up). There will be different judges for each "show", the judges would not be allowed to debate in that show, but they would be allowed to in the next show and won't be picked as judges.

I've never been into debates myself, because I'm not really good at expressing my ideas and thoughts, but I like this idea. Some interesting debates could come up out of this.

I imagine most members here prefer mass debating over 1v1s.

How has no one said "I'm a master debater" yet?

I would get too aggressive and passionate to participate, and perhaps even to watch. lol. I am so stinking competitive.

I think it would be fun/interesting to have a 'non-sense' category. Where the topics were things like "Should crayons be used as toothpicks for cardboard toys?" or "Would crackers or macaroni be better served with the cheese on the moon?" I would totally participate in that lol.

Read Waser Lave's post above again. At least, I'm 99% sure that was what he meant lol.

I'm no good at debating myself, but this would be fun to watch (and would probably induce less brain-shattering headaches than watching trolls debate elsewhere on the Internet). And I totally support Prisca's suggestion of having a nonsense category.

I think it's a great idea lol Worth trying at least, if it doesn't work out at least there was an effort right?

 example debate questions:

Can we justify space exploration while there are still starving humans on the earth?

Which is more important to making a great song, lyrics or beats?

Has the deflate gate tarnished the NFL with the way it was handled, or did the NFL handle it correctly?

So, no one wants to do this or should I do a "mini event" to see how it goes?

Ok, I'm going to try to run a "mini event" then. PM me if you would like to be in this "mini event" debate. We'll see how many people PM me and I will go from there. Thank you!

I'm bumping this back up since college is ending soon and the website will have it's 3-4 month boom like it usually does, which means more people to debate.

I'd love to observe somehow. Have you guys thought about voting on the anonymous arguments?

Doing it anonymously is boring. Each debate should be its own topic, so people can view the progress of the discussion. You can simply appoint a judge (or team of judges) who aren't going to be swayed by usernames.

How would you appoint a judge/team of judges that would be non-biased though?

Does anyone really give enough of a shit to be biased over a debating contest?

Yes. It would at least be unconscious bias if not conscious

It's a shame you think so poorly of the other members, nitro.

Its human nature *shrugs*

It's actually not. Plenty of people make the effort to adjust their behaviour regarding unconscious bias, which, by the way, is a much bigger deal when it comes to generalised prejudices. My understanding is that unconscious bias doesn't manifest in reactions to specific individuals, but in more generic circumstances.
