I have been cutting out dairy (mild milk allergy) and cutting down on carbs lately. I want to lose some weight, but my main goal here is to have a better diet. Baby steps!

So far today I made myself a tastey smoothie for lunch. Almond milk, antioxidant blend frozen fruit, and a banana. I forgot how much I love smoothies.

I also had a 100 calorie pack of Skinny Pop for a snack and sadly no breakfast. I need to start eating something besides coffee in the morning.

Not sure what I will make for dinner later.

Been drinking chlorophyll water lately and trying to add as much veggies to my food as much as possible. The curry I had yesterday had carrots, peas, potatoes, onions and, some beef. In the end it just looked like veggies with a bit of sauce but was delicious.

Edit:

Forgot to mention I've been throwing ground flax seed in all my foods.

Today, I ate fried eggs and potatoes with butter, tumeric and lite salt. I tried kombucha for the first time. I am currently drinking a smoothie made of cauliflower, chai spice, matcha (thanks @Padme ) avocado, banana, kelp, chia, flax, and vanilla extract.

I've started eating vegetables and fruits daily recently (from about few months) and I'm not sure if I have enough variation in my vegetables and fruits: cucumber, lettuce, carrot, aubergine, broccoli, cabbage, banana and tomato are the only vegetables that I eat most of the time. Is variation actually important? or I'm missing something out?

Definitely update on cauliflower smoothie (was it raw?)

While there's nothing wrong with the fruits and vegetables you listed, it's good to have a variation because you'd provide your body with a broad spectrum of nutrients as well as antioxidants. A good rule of thumb is to try and get lots of different colours. As for missing anything, the purple of aubergine peel indicates anthocyanins, so unless you're already eating the peel (after a good wash) then you'd benefit from some blue-purple fruit/veg. It really depends on what you have access to and what you enjoy eating. If you don't mind listing what you enjoy and what you can find around you, I'm sure somebody might even have a recipe to share.

Fun nerdy fact: Broccoli and cabbage are actually from the same family, whereas lettuce is not.

The matcha was great. I actually ate the smoothie again for breakfast it was so good. I added a little pineapple too. (I'm just assuming you're talking about the matcha. The egg was good too, that's why I eat one almost every day. I love fried eggs on salad, cause you can stab the yolk and it's like dressing omg. The kombucha was also good, as long as I didn't smell it first. I liked the bubbles.)

Variation is important because each fruit/veg has a different blend of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. You can log it in something like cronometer that tracks micronutrients and see what you're missing out on though.

No, it wasn't raw, it was frozen. It tasted really producey and healthy, but I'm going to blame that on my taste buds being off due to eating half a dozen doughnuts on mothers day.

I had summer rolls and vegetarian pho for lunch. It was the first time I ever tried lotus root, which is really cool looking when sliced.

I love smoothies and all but 5 cups seems like 2 meals worth. Also, what makes them squash chips as opposed to squash slices?

ummm... it feels like 2 meals worth when you're drinking it, but when I added up my cals for the day, I was still under 1400. I drank it for breakfast, after breakfast, and as a side for lunch. But when the goal is 7-9 cups of veg, it's hard not to stretch a smoothie out for most of the days. They were squash slices. Kids like it better when you say squash 'chips' though. (the real key when getting them to like it is over-exaggerated finger quotation marks in the air while saying 'chips'.
(basically my day consists of nonstop food intake)

I've been thinking about trying Paleo for a while now. I don't have much issue with eating too much, I'm just eating too much junk.

Even if I'm not going over my calorie intake, I still feel sluggish and gross a lot of the time :(

I'm not sure if I want to do no cheese, though. Maybe Paleo + cheese -- technically cheating but I think cheese is okay in moderation, and doesn't make me feel crappy.

Actually, primal says cheese is ok, as long as you can tolerate it. I do paleo sometimes, but even just cutting out a bunch of junk and replacing it with whole foods will be good for you, paleo or not.

Oh! That's perfect then. I tend to do better with a structured diet that forbids foods, rather than just saying I'll "eat healthy." I did Keto for a while but I found it really, really hard to stick to. Even after doing it for a month I'd still have intense cravings for sugar and it just made me binge on it when I finally caved. Being able to keep fruit in my diet would help, I think :)

Why 7-9 as opposed to 5?

As long as they eat them, they'll develop a taste for them. Case in point, me.

Anybody ever try starfruit? They have them on sale at my local grocer and mom and I are debating trying one.

Had my usual banana and almond oatmeal for breakfast with a kiwi on the side. Lunch was a cucumber, mushroom and spinach sandwich on whole wheat bread with mustard and horseradish.

Might have some air-popped popcorn later if I feel like it. Supper will probably be bell-pepper-stuffed BLSL chicken breast topped with roasted garlic salsa, whole wheat couscous, and brussel sprouts. Best vegetable ever.

I did keto and loved it. The issue I had was that it wasn't nutrient dense enough for my needs.

Yesterday I made a bacon and egg sandwich for breakfast, then went to Tgif for drinks and apps around noon, came back had a few beers, later got a bottle of tequila and some McDonald's (two double cheeseburgers and a bacon mcchicken).

I know you got totally obliterated yesterday but I know you're capable of reading. Go back and read the first post where this is listed as a serious thread for people to support one another and keep themselves accountable.

Please have some respect, which I assume you were raised to have and post your unhealthy habits elsewhere.

Depending on ripeness, starfruit can be slightly sweet, but it's usually quite tart and astringent so it might not be to everyone's liking. It has a nice aroma though.

Buying

They are usually light green and will turn increasingly vibrant yellow as they ripen. They will ripen in your kitchen, so you can get a few and try them at different degrees of ripeness to see which you like best. A fresh startfruit should be very firm, like apples.

Eating

If you cut it up (remove the edges on the 5 ridges, the tip and the end. Peeling the rest is optional but it will reduce the tartness) and it doesn't taste like something you can bear to eat it the way it is, slice it (across the fruit rather than along, so it comes up in star shaped slices) and have it as a salad with a savoury dressing, it goes well with savoury.

Why 5?

Idk. Isn't that the recommended amount? Unless you were advocating critical thinking, in which case I have no response because I'm guilty of being sheep.
