Apparently, The cheese making places are too clean to support hole making. There's microscopic hay particles in the air that make holes in it, and modern facilities take that out of the equation.

 

Would you rather have holey cheese or 'clean' cheese?

Swiss is honestly one of my least favorite types of cheese. Havarti often has tiny little holes, I don't care, I kind of like it. But I prefer cheeses I like without holes, that way I get more cheese per slice.

Not holes in the normal sense, like little lines. Almost little hole-ish microfractures throughout, so that when you tear it, you can see in internally tiny holes and lines.

Do we have a favorite type of cheese thread? Because I am a pepperjack, havarti, gouda guy. And as an American I lose a bit of patriotism every time I think of or eat american cheese.

I'm not a fan of swiss, so this doesn't really impact me, but I do find it interesting that they went with the simple solution of "put the hay back in" instead of some more convoluted chemical process.

Honestly the holes were always really unsettling to me as a kid. I used to think that mice would come and chew holes all the way through.

I had a great Habanero Mango cheese a couple of weeks ago, don't remember the type. You can get spicy versions of basically any cheese if you go the the cheese counter in your local supermarket and look.

@ivysaur you can get cheap spicy cheese that isn't pepperjack in the normal cheese area too. Sargento has a chipotle something in their 'tastings' line and Kraft has a chipotle aged white cheddar that's great with eggs.
