Yeah horrible
That's true, the way they try to avoid it is a bit over the top. But I'd be a bit paranoid too though if that happened in my country, I think I would just walk over it real fast with big steps.

You're far more likely to fall off a ladder and injure/kill yourself. Be safe. Avoid ladders.

There had been a few escalator-related incidents in China before this. This is the most horrific though, so some people are probably going over the top. I mean, they are more likely to injure themselves trying to avoid the top of the escalators

Joke all you want, but I got hurt on an escalator when I was 10, and I had to take my pants off or else I don't know what would happen.
I wasn't joking about the ladders. It doesn't minimize what you went through or anyone else who's had an escalator accident, though. My point was more that we spend a lot of time worrying about things that statistically have a much less likely chance of happening than other things. Like a focus on airplane crashes versus car crashes.

I wasn't being serious xD I got hurt on an escalator once, but I made it sound dramatic on purpose

did you wear underwear?

did you wear underwear?
I always wear underwear, you never know when you're gonna lose your pants

It's awful that that happened, and I don't think it's any more silly for people to be scared of escalators there now than it is for us to be scared of airplanes after one crashes.
It is silly if you look at statistics, but the human psyche is not geared to take that kind of info in as effectively as hearsay because it is a relatively new type of information.
I see no reason to poke fun at people for falling prey to outdated human programming.

To be honest there's a lot of things to be wary of in China, from escalators to hard liquor. Don't forget the whole tainted baby milk thing from a few years ago, massive air pollution, corruption etc. People complain about things like health & safety but we're actually pretty lucky in the West relatively speaking.

Man has foot amputated after latest China escalator incident
A man has had his foot amputated after it became stuck in a shopping centre escalator in China at the weekend.
The incident in Shanghai comes a week after a woman died after being dragged into an escalator at a shopping centre in Jingzhou, central China.

i take back everything that i said. NO MORE ESCALATORS FOR ME. (not in china at least)

I do remember an escalator grabbing the hem of my skirt when I was a child. I freaked out, but luckily the fabric tore (it had lace at the edge).

Me, myself and I are wondering what kind of people/escalators are out there. *scared under the blanket*
I mean, we have escalators in Portugal since 1980, and the only big accident with it occurred last year when a 17 yo dude died after falling from the top of one (12 meters), because he was sitting in the handrail like a boss. Other that that, the only "accidents" we have are small falls when people are leaving the escalators and lost shoes due to the amount of people, occurrences during rush hours mostly in the subway/train stations.
Wtf is happening out there? D: Lack of maintenance? The escalator people are setting up traps to hunt humans??

90% of the time, I prefer to use the stairs over escalators or elevators.
Such a sad story.

This is why I hate media. Now everyone is being paranoid about escalators. According to WHO, 1240000 deaths occured on the world's roads in 2010, that's almost 3397 death per day.
