Basically this woman in Kentucky is denying people marriage licenses since the equal marriage passing from the Supreme court. She says she refuses to not because she holds ill will against anyone but because she believes that if she does, she will go to hell.

 

 

Defying the Supreme Court and saying she was acting “under God’s authority,” a county clerk in Kentucky denied marriage licenses to gay couples on Tuesday, less than a day after the court rejected her request for a delay.

A raucous scene unfolded shortly after 8 a.m. at the Rowan County Courthouse here as two same-sex couples walked into the county clerk’s office, followed by a throng of journalists and chanting protesters on both sides of the issue. One couple, David Ermold and David Moore, tried to engage the county clerk, Kim Davis, in a debate before the cameras, but as she had before, she turned them away, saying repeatedly that she would not issue licenses to any couples, gay or straight.

“Under whose authority?” Mr. Ermold asked.

“Under God’s authority,” Ms. Davis replied.

Ms. Davis says same-sex marriage violates her Christian beliefs. She took office in January, succeeding her mother, who had been the county clerk for 37 years.

I believe she is not fulfilling her duties assigned by the Kentucky government and the federal government. Due to her religious objections, valid or not (regardless of anyone's opinions), she should resign and not be allowed to hold office again. She is an elected official, she does not have the right to deny a federal and state service mandated by the government. That is infringing on the rights of citizens who have equal protection of the law. This goes the same for any public business. If she were a church official, she can be a bigoted shitlord all she wants, but this is not the case.

Separation of church and state should be the law of the land. If she refuses to follow the law of the land, then she should gtfo.

This is the same woman who, while married to her first husband, had an affair with who would later be her third husband becoming pregnant, had twins (after the divorce; she was unmarried at the time. Children out of wedlock) and convinced her second husband to adopt them.

 

She's been married 4 times, divorced 3 times.

 

I don't really see how anyone can argue that she has a leg to stand on for the case of "sincerely held religious beliefs" because they weren't apparently that sincerely held during the years she was having affairs and getting remarried but now....NOW she's all about her religious convictions and she can't possibly fathom having to sign a marriage license for a same-sex couple. That would just be the last straw...

 

The issue now is, if we put her in jail, she'll become a martyr to the religious extremists.

If this recent gay marriage ruling violates her religious beliefs, then she should have resigned months ago. She probably didn't think that she'd be issuing licenses to gay couples, but if she's not going to fulfill her obligations as an elected official, then she should look for another job.

@Florg This is the biggest conundrum with this woman. We don't need anymore of that political Christian persecution bullshit in this country. Making her do her job is not a first amendment violation; freedom of religion does not protect government employees who must fulfill their duties as an elected official, as much as some would like. I wouldn't care if she were a bigoted fuckwit if she weren't in any form of government and as long as she were following the law. This type of shit is why we should have better separation of church and state. There has been Christian privilege in this nation's government for far too long. I wonder if she would refuse to marry a bi-racial couple? I heard she inadvertently married a trans person, not sure on the validity of that. 

She needs to get gone. She's an abomination to the law and a hateful little shit. I'm not sure how elected officials in a local government get removed though.

This woman needs to resign. She's not doing her job, and when people don't do the job they're supposed to do, they get fired. But since she's elected or something, she can't really be fired so all that's left would be for her to resign. If I was there I'd be holding a sign saying "adultery, kids born of of wedlock. You're already going to hell according to your beliefs. Give these people their licenses!"

Good. That's a smart judge who knew that her supporters would just pay the fine for her and it wouldn't do anything. She deserves the time in the slammer, didn't she order other people not to hand out licenses too, basically telling them "don't do your job. break your oath that you took when you got this job"?

Personally, I think she should have simply been removed from office for refusing to do what she swore to do, and promptly forgotten.

I agree with that sentiment. I think sending her to jail is great, but I am sad also because she's now been martyred for all her fundamentalist friends to fawn over. She'll be a pawn in a political game to incite rage because clearly it's Christian "persecution". Ew.
