Yes and no. Had 2 girlfriends and I broke up the "no contact rule" after 1 year or so. Yes because i think it's plenty of time to move on and know what I want in the future. No because well i broke it after all  Either ways you do can become friends with your ex but that requires a lot of conditions to be met. Depends on what lead to breaking up, if you are OK with that without any second feelings and most above all let them know your intentions. Oh and don't ever fall in the temptation of re-attaching. Almost felt for that one after 2 years+ of breaking up with my first gf. There was a period of time of like 2-3 weeks where we started talking like we have just met and felt in love. It felt really weird but good in some way. After giving it some thought we decided it wouldn't workout. As weird as it may sound we were both ok with that and i'm glad I didn't make any mistakes  :)

I did this with my grandmother, who is abusive and was basically my parent.  I legit went homeless for a few days and moved across country to get away from her.  Hell, right now I'm sorta homeless as I'm basically crashing with a friend.

Heh, to think I was still in that place when I joined this board.  Funny.

Anyways, six taxing months later I can say that I am no longer ambivalent about death, and instead find it to be disturbing, and I haven't self harmed in, oh, four months?

So yeah, if your Ex is bad for you, no contact all the way.  If you're just trying to quash the embers of your romantic relationship, I don't know what to say.

I actually have had to do this not for people in a relationship, but people who one has become quite attached to or so. E.g. people who end up being close confidantes, then you fall out with them, that kind of situation.

It actually seems to work. Well, when it gets to that point there's not a lot of alternative sometimes anyway, even if there's no harsh parting of ways or anything. It hurts still, of course, but I guess that wears out with time.
