What letters? There's at least 10,000 in this thread alone.
The letters of the English alphabet. Do letters (A-Z) coincide with the numbers referenced in the puzzle (ie. the first is driven, the second is sound, etc)?

Does the puzzle have anything to do with the genre pulp fiction?

I KNEW IT.
Does the puzzle relate to Chandler's The Big Sleep?

It's funny because I never knew him as well until I was in the process of making this puzzle.

It's okay. I'd only heard of him once in a literature class before this. So I didn't even know him. He was a pulp fiction writer (as in the genre of literature for pulp magazines). Most of it was cheap crime thriller stuff I think. The second hint is a quote from his book The Big Sleep.

That is how I figured it out. I have never heard of the dude.
Are all of the clues relating to Raymond Chandler?

I GOT IT
Spoiler
That only took 30 years to get.... phew
It was pretty ingenious to not use the writers' names. That threw me off for a while
You got it right! Congratulations!
Unfortunately, I'm tied up at the moment to really give you the confetti gifs you deserve.
woo.
I'll PM you the prize when I'm ready.
Don't let my unenthusiastic manner fool you. I am giddy with pride.

Congrats @Roger5 I honestly didn't expect this to be solved before February.
well damn.. wow
@Roger5 (our random cat that claimed us as its owner is named roger, even though its female) gratz :3
Thank you, guys.
It was really hard... I thought it'd have to do with Team Fortress 2, since the Bloodhound item that mentions Raymond Chandler was mentioned, but Kelvin said the puzzle had nothing to do with mmos.
I thought 2 across was TheBigSleep for sure. "dead men are heavier than broken hearts" was inscribed in Raymond's shared gravestone of him and his wife. The quote referring to his book.
I read Raymond's full bio on wikipedia, and tried a lot of combinations but they just wouldn't match. Then I tried searching combinations of his name and the clues. Things like "Raymond Chandler sound" on google can lead you to a website with one of Raymond Chandler's works: 10 commandments for writing detective fiction. That one was no. 1 for sure since the commandments matched the hint, and I thought thebigsleep was 2 for sure also. So I just put ten commandments twice because of the hint "one is equal" (that's literally all I had as support for 1 down). I thought I had it but Kelvin didn't acknowledge it, so I went through the thread's rules again and saw Kelvin could be lying.
OOOH this bitch is making me work twice... I have to argue you're lying now... I thought. I was going to post something like " *slams desk* OBJECTION!!!!"
But then I also read one question, saying no answer could be more than 2 words... and also not all answers had to do with Chandler.... So I was wrong.
I thought the clue "names take too much space" was referring to 1 down, so I tried a lot of combinations with "Thornton", Chandler's middle name, but nothing worked. I then looked for more ten commandments combinations on google and found 1 down was actually right, it was another work by Knox Chandler now. That's when I got that 2 across was also something like that. I typed in "20 commandments detective fiction" and the twenty rules for writing about detective fiction came up, by S.S. Van Dine. The rules matched Kelvin's clues this time.

Bitches think I'm lying and spouting bullshit but I'm just smart at my game.
By the way, bloodhound is a synonym for detective.
When will we get another 1 of your puzzles @Kelvin ?
