These days a person wearing too much makeup is the least of our problems when it comes to what someone really looks like.

I love wearing makeup, although my husband and friends say I don't need it. I wear it because I enjoy it. I don't think it's a lie, except the fact when woman contour the crap out of their face, then I say yes it is a lie. Contouring makes you look like another person altogether. I never contour, but I do the basics- foundation, simple eyeshadow, sometimes a simple eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick. Wearing makeup makes woman feel more confidant about their appearance, and it does enhance their natural beauty. I just hate seeing woman hide their face with tons of smokey eye and stuff like that.

I think it can go both ways. Yes, sometimes it can be a lie when someone wears so much that it hides who they are. but most people are not this way. The typical teenager/woman/adult does not wear makeup to hide who they are but to feel good about themselves, and with this intent, I see no problem with it.

It's a bit much to say it's a 'lie', really -- reminds me of the stereotype of the guy who hits on an attractive lady in a bar, and then finds her less attractive the next morn sans makeup, and starts calling her a liar or something.

I guess makeup can be used to disguise and distort, etc. I'd say, it generally instead enhances one's own looks though. Even if you're, like, a drag queen with a drag face totally different from your regular one.

Depends, if it changes your entire face like contour makeup (basically photoshop'd face), but if it's to just enhance/highlight certain things like the eyes/eyebrows and maybe just a little foundation then it's not a lie.

I don't think makeup is considered a lie although it can change the way someone completely looks like.

No, wearing makeup is not a lie. I can see why some people may feel that extensive contouring and flawless matte skin may seem like you're lying about what you look like, but are you, really? Even those who are ridiculously skilled at 'natural' makeup and contouring still look like they're wearing makeup, let alone the vast majority of people who can't contour like champions. The whole idea that it is a 'lie' implies that we wear makeup to tick people into liking us, or that it's even solely for that purpose which is pretty presumptive. I'mma wing my eyeliner for me, right?!

 

Besides, I wear makeup for myself. I know everyone says that and when I've said it before, I've been accused of lying but... I've been single for like 4 years or something. Perhaps longer. I don't go out because I go to bed early. I'll put makeup on some days just to be around the house... alone. Why? I like playing around with it and sometimes putting on a bright lipstick makes me feel super powerful, which is why I'll often put lipstick and fancy eye makeup on when I'm feeling really sick. I'll put nice makeup on before I go to the library for a heavy day of study alone, yet I won't wear makeup to the shops sometimes. I wear makeup because I feel awesome when I do so ,and it's got nothing to do with low self-esteem or trying to attract someone.

 

Another thing I love about putting on makeup is that it's a ritual, right? My makeup is most on point when I am super stressed because it's a little ritual that I do and it just helps clear my mind. It sounds dumb but when I'm stressed, little routines are the greatest thing ever and it gives me a little bit of time to think about something else. I straighten and curl my hair most when I'm stressed as well. Same reason.

^ Guys definitely can, coz theres no rule saying that guys aren't allowed to use makeup. That's more of society's construct, and I do agree that if a man does try to wear makeup, he will definitely get a lot of negative backlash for it.

As a guy that enjoys using eyeliner for example, because there's nothing better than waking up and becoming a movie villain, I agree that you get a lot of negative feedback, and I also agree, that, just like most women on my life have told me, you shouldn't care.

 

It's not lying, isn't wearing clothes lying then? You're not showing your true skin, your true self!!

Makeup is just that, something people can use to look better, maybe, to feel better with themselves, or just because you can and want.

Acutlaly I think this sort of sums up the argument, if you do admit to wearing makeup, surely that's not considered lying. After all, you are telling the truth. Whereas if you were wearing a ton of makeup but claiming it is all natural that's when there's a problem.

i think guys can look super fierce in makeup, and the fact that there's such a huge backlash against that and boxing them into the "definitely gay" category makes me sad. it's a form of expression, and i'm agreeing with the general consensus here. not a lie if you don't pretend you don't have any on.
