I recently switched from a mac to a PC and have experienced the wonderful world on online gaming. I decided to go back to my Maplestory roots and started over in a new(ish/er) world called Reboot. I honestly have no idea how long it has been a world but I will lay out a list of Pros and Cons for all of you. If you played Maplestory back in the day you might actually enjoy it, I am enjoying it pretty well.

What is Maplestory?

Maplestory is a MMORPG where you play as a class and save the Maplestory world from mobs of monsters and bosses. I honestly don't know much about the folklore of Maplestory but it is very indepth and each character has a storyline on the relations to everything... Basically some evil dude came and f*cked everything up. It is a 2D game with simple keyboard skills. Some jobs have some pretty sick animations and classes, each are unique and there are a lot of them. It is a super fun game and pretty easy to pick up. There are a few different worlds to choose from, I recommend Reboot.

Spoiler

Pros:

  • Fast leveling: Since the new level cap is 250, leveling up to 120 is not like it used to be. It took me a few days but that was just because I am super busy in Nursing School. I just used this training guide and followed the skill building guides on this website.
  • Very active: Shockingly this world is very active compared to the other worlds, which are basically dead since everyone (it seems) moved to Reboot. It doesn't take long to find a party but it's balanced enough to where you can easily find a map, unless there is a 2x EXP event.
  • Not Pay 2 Play: The cash shop is very small in Reboot and have a selective inventory but they do allow you to buy a few things that used to cost NX with mesos. You can buy cubes, marriage tickets and the face emojis with mesos along with other items.
  • Reboot Rewards: You also get various rewards for being in the Reboot world. You get these boxes at specific levels that give you a sh*t  ton of cubes and scrolls. The monsters also have an increased difficulty to encourage you to play with other people. There is also no economy unless you want to utilize the cash shop. You virtually don't have to worry about mesos since the drop rate is elevated and meso bags give you tons of mesos.

Cons:

  • No economy: In Reboot player to player trading is not allowed. There is also no FM, so you have to scroll everything and find all of your equipment on your own. This to me isn't much of a con but it is to other people. You also can't trade items between the characters you have on your account (certain items/mesos you can).
  • Cash shop: If you are a Henney hoe then the cash shop is lacking in comparison to the other worlds. None of the items are permanent and the selection is very minimal. It reminds me of Maplestory back in the day, although I am sure they will add more items into the cash shop as time continues.
  • Confusing: Although Maplestory is setup to be a super simple game it can be confusing. There are a lot of random quests that will pop up and transport you to various places in Maplestory and if you don't know your way around you can get lost. However if you use google you can find your way to places pretty easily. There are also a lot of equipment you can attach to your characters, link skills and an extreme variety of jobs to choose from.
  • Nexon: Well let's just say Nexon is Nexon. They are the neopets equivalent of Jumpstart, however I feel they do a better job. They are still greedy and don't listen to the players although they are much better than they used to be.

My rating for this game is a 8/10. Simply put, I am a true Maplestory lover. It gives me so much nostalgia playing it and I play by myself with nobody. It's just fun to be able to do the things I couldn't do as a kid because leveling was so damn hard and now it's cake. They have added a ton of new features that allow you to travel quickly across Maplestory. They have the boss search function which lets you easily transport to bosses and puts you into a party while giving you a Weapon/Magic ATT boost. I sound like a Maplestory advocate but idk it's just fun and if anybody wants to play go to Reboot and hmu I can help you out along the way.

If you play/want to play in Reboot PM here and I can tell you my IGN, I am also the owner of a guild so if you would like to join let me know about that as well and I can invite you. If you are just starting out I can let you leech at Zakum and grab all of the drops/Zakum Helmets. Although you can't profit much off of it, it allows you to have a significantly better weapon and equips.

You can sign up for an account/download the game here. That's all, happy mapling and have a nice day.

I've played MapleStory for so long, and I actually really liked how Reboot worked. I haven't played as of recently because of my lack of interest anymore but I did really like Reboot. Leveling didn't feel very different to me, but the economy did. I'm used to trading and getting things that way, but I was completely immobilized and had to enchant all the things I'd gotten. Because I made a Shade, I'd basically f*cked myself over because Shades with no funding don't do a lot of damage. After getting to like, 120-130 or something I'd went back to my normal world. Although Reboot is something I really like, I'd prefer to be in the world I'm used to where I can trade.

I think Nexon made the right choice by making a world like this. When MapleStory 2 comes out for NA, I guarantee they're going to lose a chunk of their original MapleStory players. Though they're the same and will both earn money, Nexon would prefer both games to have their community. With the release of Reboot, I think that they're really looking to find something that the players are willing to stay and play with.

All in all, I like it-- I just don't like it enough to shy away from my home (YMCK).

Protip: Have friends.

I've been playing Maplestory for years and it's always fun until you need to party. The community is incredibly toxic.

Not being able to trade is pretty annoying, I have a shade in reboot and I can boss pretty well and have decent damage.

I've been playing on reboot since January. I got two or three characters to 130-ish, then got bored and now I'm playing on Scania but it's kinda dead, and when you're a noob it's hard to get mesos even for mastery books. :/

I don't run in to that many hackers but yeah leveling does get slow around 130, I pretty much just go on to Zakum twice a day and level up my other characters to 120 to get the link skills

I would absolutely play MS again if the content only stemmed so far as to Horn Tail. After Leafre came out, that whole game got really stupid.

Agreed.  Joe and I played together exclusively, we met a couple of cool people on there but for the most part the community sucks.  @Cannabis - do you feel this way about Reboot as well?
