Any musicallovers here? Which ones have you seen? Which ones are you aching to see? What's your favourite?

I'll just go ahead and confess I'm not really a musical fan but need to brush up on the topic and I'm curious to see your inputs ;P

I have seen Phantom of the Opera, Wicked, Jersey Boys and The Color Purple on Broadway. I liked them all except the color purple, and the cast of Phantom when I saw it was actually pretty bad. I saw Jersey boys with the original cast, and I loved it. Wicked is always good too, but no one can compete with "Adele Nazeem" and #TeamKristinChenowith

Also: Do you mean musicals on stage, or movies too?

I mean mostly on-stage but I'm not opposed to discussing movie musicals :p

I really liked the movie version of Phantom of the Opera so I'm actually really curious to see it on stage.

Oh, this April I'm going to see Sweeney Todd in Amsterdam! As far as I know it's going to be translated to Dutch though, so I'm really afraid it'll be bad :( Sweeney is my only and all-time favourite musical (because everyone dies horribly, duh). I wish I were able to see the real deal. The Sweeney Todd in concert is probably my favourite version. So impressive with so little staging!

I used to love the movie version until I saw the broadway version for the 25th anniversary with Sierra Boggess   Holy shit you'll never find a more awesome version. Go watch that on DVD or youtube :) I highly recommend it.

I don't think anyone can hate Wicked, but that's an old classic - my favorite is probably Candide.

They made Candide into a musical? That'd be something to see.

I gotta say, I'm not so into Broadway musicals, possibly because it's highly dependent on actually being in New York or London. Yeah, I know they're often re-staged elsewhere, but usually not with the original cast or direction. Theater in the sense we're using it here just has too many connotations of, well, rich people. It's like ballet or the opera. For so long they've been exclusively upper class pursuits - the leisure class was named for these entertainments.

Yeah, really not the critique for this thread.

That said, I'm fairly fond of film musicals. Pitch Perfect was great.

No mention of The Rocky Horror Picture Show or Little Shop of Horrors? I'm not one for musical theatre or theatre in general really but film musicals I can watch when they're not awful.

I love Mamma Mia. I think it's in London, actually.
