Looks like TNT added Recaptchas to Userlookups and Petlookups, but not Petpages.

 

Also, lag. I'm not sure if the Captchas are supposed to reduce lag, or if they're causing it, but this nonsense is rendering the site pretty useless to me.

 

Is this actually useful for them to have done? I guess it could reduce UC account selling...maybe.

 

Thoughts?

After keeping an eye on user feedback over the weekend, we want to clarify a couple things on the upcoming security measures! The abuse of lookups discussed on Friday was in reference to programs that are used to refresh or load several pages in a short time – way beyond what a regular player could ever do - with the intent to gather information about those accounts and their pets. While there are other things we could do to address the impact this has on site performance, those changes would have limited impact on these programs themselves. The reason we're going as far as to implement protection on those pages to make sure your beloved accounts and pets stay safe, in addition to helping site performance. 

You should start seeing this implemented around the site later today. Please let us know if you experience any issues going forward!

When they posted that on Friday I thought it was to add captchas when we visit others' PL (and was already bad enough), in a idiotic attempt to make us stop abusing the bday cupcakes after the failed now-you-have-to-be-logged-in-to-see-petlookups rule. But add a captcha when we are trying to see our own pages? Lol

Basically another site released a program that is effectively DDoSing Neopets in the progress to store UL data, pet data etc. Therefore making the program worthless.

Well, I guess it's good a program that was causing lag is crippled, but it seems the reCAPTCHA is causing more lag than the program was...

 

Also, it's fucked some of my lookups because of an added margin.

I'd say the program is still running, just not grabbing the data.

DDoS is a type of DOS attack where multiple compromised systems, which are often infected with a Trojan, are used to target a single system causing a Denial of Service (DoS) attack.

 

With the multiple systems being multiple instances of the program open.

DDoSing is a way of making something slow down, if not crash all together. It's not an uncommon tactic for taking down websites. It can be as simple as getting people to click the same link (with or without knowing what they are doing) to lag out a server, in the simplest terms (I think).

 

Anyone exploit the lag yet on neopets?

@Katya they arent ddosing directly, actually. The program just seems to store account info on their own local computer so that it's accessible. Of course that increases the load on the server quite a biitt.

What I meant is why?
Cheating on Neopets, that I understand - people are trying go get something for themselves without hindering others, but SSoD with the purpose of storing not-so-random info about others' accounts only has one purpose.

 

How to exploit lag?
