I'd rather no guns because if everyone has a gun that gives more opportunity for kids to get ahold of them, suicidal people, homicidal people, etc.

As someone who has spent a decent amount of time in both the US and Europe, I definitely feel safer in a country where the average citizen does not have a gun. Last year, there was an incident at my University (in the states) where someone brought a gun to campus and attempted to shoot multiple people. Luckily, the gun jammed and no rounds were fired. How did my university respond to this incident? They started the debate on whether or not carriers with concealed licenses should be allowed to carry guns on campus. The result? Hundreds of people now carry concealed weapons on my campus. Due to this, I feel more unsafe than ever before.

But in what kind of country do you live if you have to protect yourself from your own government? Or is that the point I'm missing?

It was mentioned by my history teacher in high school that US citizens have the ability to carry guns due to the role that guns played in overturning the old government. Without guns, the citizens way back then would not have been able to rebel and overturn a corrupt government and introduce the current democracy. It is with this idea in mind that citizens are allowed to carry guns to "protect" themselves from the government - in the sense that, should there be a need for a civil revolution, citizens are empowered to do so. So it is not "protect" in the sense that the government will send FBI agents to kill you because they decided that you earnt more np than they did on neopets. 

 

Not sure how correct this is, but that is my understanding from what my history teacher told me.....I should have paid more attention in class though

I also live in a country where nobody carries a gun. Even the police here keep their weapons in a locked box in their cars rather than on them. I feel much safer knowing that there aren't random strangers all around me who could just snap at any minute, pull out their guns and shoot me....

It boils down to this, yes. This simple reason is why gun control in the US is such a touchy subject. When our government tries to introduce regulations, citizens claim their rights are being stripped and the government is trying to subdue them.

 

It's stupid but it makes sense.

Definitely a country with no guns.

Very lucky to live in Australia.. you rarely see a gun related death here, although they are becoming a little more common.

 

 

I agree that people are the ones who kill, not guns, but if there were no guns then there would be no people killing with guns

I'd love to live in a place where on one carried guns, but people suck so if they don't have gun they'll just find other ways to hurt people. It sucks that people have to buy guns to protect themselves from crazy people with guns or knives.

What's depressing is that so many groups rile these people up and convince them that any time a gun regulation is passed (or even when it's attempted to be passed but fails) that someone is going to "come take" their guns and take away all of their rights...

I grew up on a farm - we had guns, we hunted, all that jazz.  But I honestly still to this day am so uncomfortable when someone around me has a firearm.  I feel much safer with no guns around so a country with no guns would be preferable to me.

If there's nobody that owns guns, then I'm very comfortable. In America, gun violence is ever increasing, so I try not to take the place I live in for granted.

I always was in favor of civilians having guns until the day that a guy put a gun in my head just because I was crossing the street outside the crosswalk.

He had my life on hand for what seemed an eternity.

Kind of an hypocritical response since I have a gun hidden on my room for self-defense.

 

But I would definetely feel safer on a country with no guns, there would obviously be more kinds of violence (And actually most of the violent cases/deaths here don't have guns on them) that would still be there.

 

But damn, guns are dangerous, and people are dumb, that's just a terrible combination.

Yes. A person diagnosed with depression should not be allowed to have a gun.

Because once you get diagnosed with depression or any mental illness, it's extremely hard to get undiagnosed or for someone to say you aren't anymore, even temporary illness, like post-partum depression.

 

Yes, I would feel much safer if everyone had a gun. If I had my way, every person would undergo mandatory gun safety classes in public school. I live in an open carry state and in my county specifically, you can take your gun anywhere there isn't a sign visibly posted at the entrance saying it's not allowed. (So basically everywhere.) I see guns every day that don't belong to me, in public, on strangers. And I live in butt-fuck, podunk, white trash merica, so some of these people are even drunk. However, the flip side of it is that I live in a small enough area that I know most of these people and the ones I don't, I know someone who does. It's so common that we're trying to pass a bill to get rid of the conceal carry permit.

Jess, wouldn't it be better if none of these people had guns? I feel like if everyone had a gun, there would be a lot more paranoia and gun trigger people around (better you than me, etc). I mean, there could be a case made, but I'm not feeling it.

No. I own a taser and a few other self defense things too, but I'm 5' tall and 115 and I don't want to have to get within arms reach of someone I need to defend me or my family from. My paranoia would increase, knowing that not only could I not protect myself, but no one else could either.

If what you're worried about is not so much other people toting guns as much as it is other people potentially causing bodily harm, I can see where you're coming from. Guns against guns just seems mutually suicidal to me. There's not much time to parry, and the person who dies is the person who reacted a millisecond too late.
