I see a lot of people on here say sports is stupid, or a waste of time, etc. Why do you think this?

I made a post once in response to Adam, I'll just post it here again to start the discussion:

Adam, on 02 Aug 2015 - 2:31 PM, said:snapback.png

I never really understood why sports fans get so riled up while watching a game. If you don't have money placed on a team, or you aren't playing, what's all the excitement about? What does a team you fancy do for you, other than possibly make you money.

It's a good question. Everyone has their passion, right? I believe you put a lot of time into your car, correct? "But that's not the same thing, I actually use my car." Good point, let's see if I can argue it.

I went to my first Mets game when I was two years old, so I've been around sports my whole life. When I lived in the city I used to go to opening day every year. It became a part of my identity. When you invest a lot of time into something, regardless of what it is, it becomes important to you. And if something is important to you, it exites you. You are invested. If the Mets make the playoffs, I'm very happy. If they don't, I'm not. If they win an important game, it puts me in a great mood. If they lose, it bums me out.

"Well, okay, you were born into that culture so it makes sense. But what about people who didn't grow up immersed in sports?" My dad was never really into football very much. We watched Mets and Knicks games, but I don't think we ever watched football, so I had to pick that up on my own. I picked the Patriots (combination of my dad being a Bills fan and they had just won the superbowl in '01). They've been very good since then, which has been nice since my other teams have been pretty bad. But one of the main things that made me such an intense fan even though I wasn't raised into it has been the adversity. People hate the Patriots, because of the scandals and because of their dominance. It's really quite interesting how even though we are a great team, we go into almost every playoff game as a sort of underdog, because of how much everyone hates us, which only really makes us love the team that much more.

"Okay, so you like sports, it's important to you, but why does it matter so much to you people? Why is it such a big deal?" I think sports is so prevalent because it's a tremendous opportunity to bond with people. Whole cities, countries, and even continents can be brought together by sports. I went to a Boston bar in the middle of Manhattan to watch the superbowl this year, and the energy was unbelievable. Hundreds of people with the same emotions flowing through each other is an incredibly powerful feeling. Many people follow sports, it's a great icebreaker when you're meeting new people. It's a common theme, and brings quick and easy discussions to fans. I could meet someone new, who might be a big football fan like myself, and we could talk for an hour without knowing anything about each other, and build on that and become friends.

Soccer, for example, especially in poorer countries, can literally be the most important thing in their lives. Their country is run down, but playing the game can make them forget about that for a while. And especially if their national team is good, it can provide an immense amount of pride that they otherwise might not have.

Is sports a silly thing to get so worked up about? Maybe. Could we be using our time and energy on more important things? Probably. But just like some people like to talk about their cars, or their videogames, or their artwork, we like to talk about sports.

And this isn't to say I don't think there are fucked up aspects about sports, like cities paying hundreds of millions of dollars to build new stadiums. I'm just interested in hearing your opinions because I never hear any reasons.

I hate sports. But I hate even more when people say it's stupid. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're stupid. I think you did a pretty good job in OP, and as a non-sports person I don't have much to add.

It just feels like people want attention when they mention how dumb or stupid sports are. What's the point?

There's something called passion. Some people have it, others don't.

FYI

Yeah I think that's the right attitude to have. I feel like a lot of the Pokemon go players posting memes on facebook, etc. complaining about people saying "I'm an adult and have a life so i dont play pokemon go, let me post that on fb!" are the same kind of people who post that they don't care about sports.

And again, as a sports person, I do think there are problems with it, like the glorification of sports and the borderline obscene amounts of money they make, but the doesn't mean sports is stupid.

Yeah, no doubt, but I'm not passionate about, say, LARPing, or watching people play video games online, but I don't go out of my way to say it's stupid.

Exactly. Also, as much as I don't like sports, I went to a soccer game once with my dad, and wow, it was amazing. You could feel the love for the game from the crowd.

Not everything is rational. I love drawing (even though I'm not great at it), but I can't think of a specific reason I love it. It just makes me feel good. And that's sports for some people. I just think people should respect what others like.

I don't actively hate sports but I believe that for profit sports leagues foster a culture of hypermasculinity, excess, corruption and down right predation. Like you take these young impressionable people and give them all this money and power because they can play a game and get shocked when things turn out horribly wrong. There's a lot of sexism in sports too. Like people look down on women's sports but will ignore actually good sportswomen simply because they don't fit a conventional standard or beauty while also being able to play sports. And people act like their team winning sports games somehow reflects on them or makes them better. It really doesn't. Like some people will riot just because their sports team lost, or worse, riot because their sports team won. Wtf.

I will respond, but like Adam, I admire the fact that you located that comment, even if it was done fairly easily.

I will say though, I don't know if I can even explain my attachment. If you asked my fiance the three things I loved the most, she would say "sports, music, and me, in that order." Of course it's a joke, but outside of those three things and politics, I don't have many interests. While watching the Super Bowl warm ups and player introductions this past February, when the Panthers were being introduced and Cam ran out on the field, she turned and asked "are you about to cry?!" and I replied "hell, I don't know." Having watched the Panthers lose to the Patriots 13 years earlier, never knowing if they'd make it back, it was an exciting thing for me. Alas, here we are now, two Super Bowl appearances in the teams 21 year history, but still zero victories. This isn't unique to the Panthers though. I am probably this invested in every team I support, for the most part.

For instance, the clip below (start at the 18 second mark and be advised, the audio is REALLY loud). I was sophomore in college and I witnessed that game in person. Most sports fan understand its significance, but my college wasn't even supposed to score in the game, much less win. An article from the AP says that the Mountaineers were "almost certain to lose badly" and "aren't expected to be anything more than sacrificial lambs." To hear this radio call today, or any time I see the replay, I get cold chills. I remember 19 year old me, sitting in The Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan, witnessing David take down Goliath. There's no sweeter sound than the silence of those 110,000 Wolverine fans.

Spoiler

I just dislike the people that get all loud and start slamming shit because their team just finger blasted the wrong hole or something. Like shut up, and sit back down you look dumb as fuck right now.

I think you hit the nail of the head with your OP answer

I generally find it that people who haven't really played any sports as a child dislike sports for some reason.

As a swimmer I found a passion in the sport and in return it caught my interest in other sports as well.

Being a fan of a sport is like nothing else in my opinion. Although most Toronto sports teams suck there's no greater feeling of pride and unity when a sports team does really well. For Toronto there was a massive Blue Jays craze and it really united the whole city in ways that I have never really seen before.

And as OP mentioned, especially in 2nd/3rd world countries, soccer is a really popular sport which helps them forget for a moment in time.

Everyone can have your opinions and you can dislike sports. But to have the opinion of sports should be abolished is just dumb

You would hate my family. They get loud af and I don't see why that's so wrong, we're just passionate about something we enjoy. Not everything has to be about money. I like soccer and I love football (and its not even a thing here, but I love it and don't care). Just because you don't like it, does not mean its dumb.

I don't hate sports; however, I do hate how people act because of them. Like people getting in fights because one team beat the other...what the fuck.

Yeah I just don't understand that. Maybe it's because I'm very mild mannered, and what I do get overly excited about I contain myself and try not to be too loud. There's also the sensory issues I have that prevent me from enjoying sports with others. Every NFL playoff season I sit in the darkness, with rum or whiskey, and watch teams play. I'll let out a "go motherfucker go!!!!" every so often, but I don't go slamming things and stomping around. I can't stand that stuff, and it's only not because I disagree with the behavior, it's more that loudness makes me feel...funky.

But to have the opinion of sports should be abolished is just dumb

It's an inside joke.

It really doesn't. Like some people will riot just because their sports team lost, or worse, riot because their sports team won. Wtf.

Also this^. What a great idea it would be to have a giant riot outside of the sports venue because "your team" won/lost.  :S

I know I said this to you last year when we first talked about sports. I think it's great that people come together to celebrate something, and forget all of the shitty mc shitshit in the world, but just like everything else there's a right way and a wrong way to act. Slamming things, kicking and stomping someone's face in, and getting belligerent is not my idea something fun to do.

Sports = food to me. Food brings people together; it's something we can talk about and enjoy. It just so happens that people don't go batshit crazy for no reason over food, unless of course you're Gordon Ramsay haha.

You said "Like shut up, and sit back down you look dumb as fuck right now." tho. I understand that some people think being loud its not polite, but thats who we're. We're loud and passionate, and it just happens that sports is one of the things we're passionate about. it's really sad when someone you like thinks the way you get excited about something you like its dumb or annoying.

This is why I love sports, and football in particular (soccer to you Americans). You get massive stadiums of people united because they love this one thing so much they put aside other divisive issues. I cried when I first learnt about the Christmas Truce of 1914 - some German and British soldiers called a ceasefire on Christmas Day and played football, sang carols. That's the power of sports.

I also agree that there are more ominous aspects to organised sports; FIFA (and likely other sports organisations) is corrupt as fuck for example, some sportsmen get paid obscene amounts of money, there is rife sexism and homophobia, and a whole host of other issues that need to be tackled. Personally, I can understand being loud and breaking shit whilst watching your team because that is how my family get when we watch a match and I'm used to it, but I also understand how it may make other people uncomfortable.
