So, it might be odd that I've never really had my own phone. But, as a result of that. I have /no/ idea what kinds are good, or anything of the sort. I'm looking to finally get one, but I don't really know. It's going to be used for data only really, so I need something that can handle that.

Price isn't too important but I'd like to keep it under 250 dollars. I don't need help finding plans or anything. I already know what I want there.

Please help.

Do you care about having a lot of customization options with this phone? Customization as in loading different operating system styles, and really configuring your own phone. Or do you just want something that will just work right out of the box, and offer little to no customization options.

I just want something that works out of the box because I'm phone illiterate.

Get an iPhone -- iPhone 5's are probably under $200, and even the 6 should be approaching that price pretty soon -- I think. In my experience with droids there's just too much to set up and fudge with to get it to work properly.

I had a Samsung for a while and it was fine. But then I switched to iPhone and I'm probably never going back. Not because I feel like anything hardware related is better, but because I find it simple and I'm awful with new technology.

I always get the zero dollar iPhones, they are overpriced and I wouldn't suggest paying money for a phone. Get a plan that allows you to pay it off in x amount of years. I have the iPhone 5s and it works just fine. No need to go out and spend a thousand dollars on the fancy new whatever.

It's eery how similar this is to me :p I switched from a Samsung Galaxy to an iPhone 5s and I can't see myself switching back any time soon. The main thing for me was the camera, the camera on my old Galaxy was dog shit. Oh and after a year I kept having to buy new batteries because the phone kept killing them somehow, i've had my iPhone well over a year now and haven't had a single problem with it yet  ^_^

I prefer droids, but I agree with these people, if it's your first and you just want to learn something once and go, the iphones are the way to go. And if you have to pay out of pocket, Groupon almost constantly has them for ~$200.

iPhones are very easy to understand. Like everyone said, right out of the box and you're good to go.

Is the iPhone anything like the iPod Touch? I had the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation Touches. Over time, I really began to hate the free apps with their 'Lite' versions and endless in-your-face ads. Anything decent needed money. And the devices used to overheat. And lag. And the batteries seemed to have really short lifespans if I used any of the devices to play games. And then apps stopped being supported for the earlier generations. After that, I've had a healthy dislike for anything Apple. I seriously felt like it didn't seamlessly fit and add to my life, it would just annoy the Hell out of me. If the iPhone is anything like that, I'd run for miles in the opposite direction.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 which has been going strong for over two years. The only wonky thing is the camera which used to focus when I first bought the phone, but now it needs to be smacked around before it takes unblurry pictures. I've noticed my battery doesn't hold charge as well as it used to, but everything I use the phone for still works smoothly and without any issues. Some free apps have obtrusive ads, but I actually don't use my phone much anymore so it doesn't bother me too much. Most of the time it's just for mail, music, YouTube or news.

All these touch-screen phones look the same to me, so there's no 'special shape' that I'm immediately drawn to. I did like the metallic blue backing of my phone, so that was a no-brainer and the only differentiating factor for me. Make sure it fits comfortably in your hand. Even the S5 is pushing it for my tiny hands, I need both hands to use it (one to hold, one to tap) without dropping it. Or if you're not going to be holding it much, then get a nice big screen for whatever you're planning on using it for. My aunt has a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and it feels so spacious on the screen, so much room for everything! It looks a bit ridiculous when she holds it up to her face to make a call though.
