Let me pick your brains. I'm researching fear and adrenaline in the broadest senses of the words. Obviously I'm applying different methods as well, conducting tests & experiments and reading up on academic papers, but I'd like to hear some first-hand experiences about scary 'everyday' situations as well. For those curious & interested as to the 'Why?', refer to the small print at the bottom.

Below a list of questions I'd like to ask you. I'm very much aware that some of the questions touch topics that are rather sensitive. If there are any subjects you're not keen on discussing out in the open, you are very welcome to send me a PM if you'd like. You'd help me greatly in my graduation.

Have you ever been in a chaotic situation in which you had to keep a leveled head? Were you able to? If you haven't, can you tell me what you think you would do? Think of an example that frightens you - this could be a plane hijacking, a car driving into the water, being kidnapped, or anything else - and tell me what you think you would do and/or what you should do. If you have, what did you do, and was it wat you expected yourself to do?

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

Do you fear death?

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

Am I a tad morbid? Yes, sorry.

But Cass, to what purpose would you like to ask us all these questions, apart from research? I'm producing a real-life horrorgame for my graduation, but it's lacking artistic depth and integrity. I've taken a lot of intuitive, unfounded decisions and based all my storytelling and visuals on popular media and clichés, which felt as a good decision at the time but is now resulting in the biggest writer's block I've ever encountered. By going back to my initial research question - 'What would you do in a horror scenario? What would I do in a horror scenario?' - I'm trying to go back to the core, and make my product something more lasting and intense, with a catharsis for the player to experience instead of the current "Yay I won"-feeling they experience now. I need to get in touch with more "real" fears than a scary man with an axe, and explore in a sort of social experiment the decisionmaking of players.

2 car accidents, only injury was a broken nose which has been broken 14 times now from kickboxing. I've prevented a couple accidents as a passenger as well.

I've been witness to an accident and was able to help the person, I was also witness to another major accident where the girl wrapped her convertible around a tree in my front lawn, front bumper touched the rear, She survived thanks to quick thinking, suffered broken ribs and a fractured pelvis.

I have not been put in a life threatening situation by a loved one.

I had a gun held to me as part of a robbery, guy suffered a broken arm and fractured jaw. Wasn't expecting me to fight back but I would rather do that than let some punk with a pistol make off with my stuff.

My biggest fear would be failing my kids or something happening to my kids. I would face any danger imaginable to make sure they were safe and in good health.

I don't fear death, the thought of leaving my kids early does scare me though.

Worst nightmare is a tough one...id say the one I had that was recurring where I went door to door with a bat killing my neighbors...and it wasn't so much that it was scary, it was the fear that I would end up doing it in my sleep (you thought you were morbid did you? Not like me!)

The last fear I overcame was heights, I forced myself to jump off cliffs until the height didn't bother me anymore.

I guess the closest to this that's ever happened to me was back in the 90's when I was in grade school. I lived in a heavily wooded area and the school yards weren't too different. Someone decided to hide in the trees and point a gun at some of the kids who ventured too close. I was one of them. I surprisingly didn't really panic. I just froze there. Until I saw one of my friends run. Then we all ran, and told the school what was happening. There were police officers on the playground daily after that. I had to be like 8 or 9 at the time. No shots were ever fired. But it was a really fucked up situation.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

I was in a bad car accident that left me physically disabled for life. Or maybe I was born with it and the accident made it worse. Who knows.

I didn't keep a very level head, I was 11. I panicked, my dad was unconscious, and the driver that hit us called the police and turned himself in for what he thought was going to be murder. The jaws of life had to be used to remove us from the mangled mess of what used to be our car. We both survived, but I still panic inside vehicles to this day and never leave my house.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Once on the highway in florida I witnessed a car accident as we were going the opposite way, the driver was flung from the car and I don't honestly know what happened after that. We couldn't really turn around or stop to help in that situation.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

Already commented about that.

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

Went into that and I don't want to give more examples of other situations.

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

Not commenting on this one

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

Suffocation/drowning, stalking, failure.

My most uncommon fear is uncovered windows at night time. The thought of being watched plagues my mind to the point where I have to cover keyholes in my house, and block every crack in the doors. I suffer from extreme paranoia. I also fear my partner dying before I do.

Do you fear death?

No. I wouldn't be upset if it happened either tbh.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

PTSD flashback nightmares.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

I haven't overcome my fears.

Honestly, no, I've never been in such a chaotic situation I don't think. I like to think if I were in a situation like you described, I'd be able to quietly watch until I found a moment where I could almost definitely jump out to help, but I'm not sure if I would. For a real life horror game, perhaps you could play with this idea - have the player try to do something in a really clever way and then absolutely fail?

Never been in a serious accident.

I saw a guy fly off his motorcycle once and skid down a street at like 50km/h. There were a lot of people around to keep an eye on him though, and he was conscious and seemed (relatively) okay. He was very scratched up, and lost his helmet in the crash, but I think his leather jacket padded him enough to save him from something worse happening. I didn't really do anything, not that there was anything much I could do.

Never really had a life or death moment.

Never been threatened beyond sketchy homeless guys being very persistent. Never directly threatened though.

No.

Dying when I want to live is probably my biggest fear. I wouldn't say I've been "depressed" in quite a while now, luckily, but I feel like there's a distinction to be made between being afraid of dying and being afraid of dying when things are going well. Which I think could be used interestingly in a horror game tbh: Perhaps incorporate dying just the moment it seems everything is going well? I don't know. Other fears are bugs (in more of a "OH GOD DISGUSTING" way rather than actually being terrified). Also tbh being put on the spot hardcore scares me. I'm kind of an actor, so I feel comfortable on stage and around people when I feel prepared. Auditions give me more stage freight than performances, because I never feel as prepared for auditions. I also have a bit of a fear of being trapped. I don't have intense claustrophobia, but I think if anyone is entirely trapped or stuck it's pretty logical to feel scared. I also have a bit of a fear of heights, but only if I feel unsafe. Like, standing too close to the edge of a cliff would freak me out because I don't trust myself not to trip. Being on a super tall rollercoaster or something doesn't scare me in the slightest because I trust it. Not afraid of flying in planes either. In this way, tbh I feel like this is a completely logical fear.

I fear death nowadays. Not nearly as cavalier as I used to be.

I don't remember many of my dreams, but one nightmare I can remember is being in the bottom part of a boat and that boat started sinking. I ended up trapped in the bottom part under the water pressure and I couldn't get out. Woke up soon after I think. Also a lot of nightmares I have are just kinda fever-dreamy, in that they don't coherently make a lot of sense but there's just an overall feeling of dread to them.

Guess the only fear I've directly overcome is stage freight, though it's kind of an ongoing work in progress. Been on various stages for quite a few different things though, so I think I'm doing okay.

I've never experienced something like this.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

I got side-swept by another van on the right side recently. I wasn't injured, and this could not have been prevented because the lanes were thin and full of cars.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

I had witnessed an accident when I was young. I wanted to help, but my mother pulled me back into a building.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

Plenty of times I could've been hit by cars (Both when I was out in the open and my parents driving.)

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

I've never experienced something like this.

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

Yes. Recently, my mother was driving and nearly fell asleep at the wheel twice, one of which almost resulted in an accident.

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

My biggest fear is dying a virgin. Or at least dying before I get to fall in love. I can handle pretty much anything else.

Do you fear death?

No. In fact, I end up wishing for it a lot.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

Drowning.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

Fear of disappointing people. I eventually came to the realization that you can't please everyone.

Never been in that situation, thankfully. But I imagine that if I were the one in danger I'd have no reaction. I'm definitely not one to fight back, but I also don't see myself losing my mind. Only freezing, which can be just as bad lol. However, if I were not directly involved, only as a witness, I'd try to help. I've started to feel this sense of responsibility lately probably because of some of my teachers. So yeah, I'd take action.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

Yes, we hit a cow once, but no one hot hurt thankfully.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Yep. This car started sliding on the road right in front of us, and ended up hitting this hill. We stopped the car and went to check on them, the driver had a scratch on his head and his nose was bleeding a little, but the passanger (his daugther) was fine. So she stayed there while we have him a ride to the hospital. If I could go back, I'd probably want to wait to see if everything was fine with him.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

No.

I can only think of three major fears, two of the very rational - stage fright and disappointing my parents, especially with how much they sacrifice for my education. The third fear, biggest of them, is being on a boat on the sea. This one doesn't make much sense. You see, I do fine on boats. I love swimming, even if I can't touch the ground. I don't mind waves. I freak out when I'm in a moving boat in the sea. Hell, I had to close my eyes on a few moments during Moana. Moana. Ugh.

Do you fear death?

Not my death - fear of others dying, especially if I could have helped, I'm terrified. But it's something I'm gonna have to work on if I want to be a doctor.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

I always forget my nightmares after a couple days. I think my brain got used to them (I had them every other night when I was a kid) and now it doesn't care anymore. But one I remember from my childhood was being traped in the dark, trying to wake myself up, but I had no voice, so I kept pinching, slapping, biting and punching myself to see if it worked, but nothing did. When I finally woke up, I still couldn't move for a few minutes. Scariest shit ever.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

None, but I'm working on my boat fear. Two months ago I was able to stay relatively calm on a boat. I did cry after I got back home though.

Have you ever been in a chaotic situation in which you had to keep a leveled head? Were you able to? If you haven't, can you tell me what you think you would do? If you have, what did you do, and was it wat you expected yourself to do?

The closest thing to this overhearing my parents get into nearly violent fights. I always go out to inspect what is going on. One of the worst times, my mom slammed a door on my dads face and when I went out to see what had happened, he had been knocked onto the ground and crying. I said "what the fuck is going on?", which for me is losing my cool since i dont curse around my parents. when it gets this bad i force my mom into her bedroom and guard the door so my dad doesnt enter and my mom doesnt leave. But in a more intense situation like a plane hijacking or kidnapping, I would like to think i would intervene and try to critically injure the assailant. Although I might just freeze.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

I have been in a few accidents, but they were only fender benders. Once, i prevented another fender bender by swerving out the way quickly. I had just checked my blind spot because I was going to change lanes and when i looked forward again, the guy in front of me had slammed on the brakes, and instinctively i just swerved to avoid him. I almost lost control of my car. Its weird because I know thats not what i am supposed to do in that situation, I should have just hit his bumper, but it was instinctive. Happened in a split second. I was shaking afterwards and had to pull over.  If there had been a motorcyclist in that lane I swerved into, I probably would have killed them.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

I have witnessed a few. Once in highschool, I was driving with a friend and another friend was following us in her car. We were turning left on a green yield, and my friend gunned it to make it before an oncoming car. Our friend behind us went as well, getting t-boned by the oncoming car. It pushed her car all the way through the intersection. Seeing that happen was surreal and I immediately called 911. We turned around asap. By the time we turned around both parties were out of their cars, making sure everyone was ok, so there wasn't much we could do except comfort our friend. One other time I saw a car somehow stranded in the middle of an intersection between both lanes of opposing traffic and saw it eventually get hit. It didn't seem too bad but I still called 911. My mom was driving and we just kept going to our destination.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

I almost drowned in the ocean when i was in 4th or 5th grade. I didnt know how to swim but I went too far into the water and it pulled me just slightly out from where my feet could touch the ground. I definatley panicked, trying to dog paddle to safe my life. Not much else went through my head except to try to keep afloat. The weird thing was I was with a friend who was there next to me, and they didnt do anything. Maybe they didnt realize I was drowning, idk. My dad saw me though and had run out to grab me. Things were just awkward with that friend after that. Also, i still dont know how to swim and im 22 now.

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

No I have never been threatened.

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

I was put in what I thought could have been a life threatening situation. I was in the car with my boyfriend and he was driving. We were in one of the worst fights we had ever had. It was very emotional and we were both younger, and inept at dealing with things like this. We ended up breaking up shortly thereafter but anyways. I was crying hysterically and he was driving like a maniac. The worst road rage I have ever seen. I was scared we were going to get in a wreck, and the worst part was we were just about to get on the freeway. I begged him to stop and pull over so I could get out of the car but it was like a 6 lane street and we were in the right 3 ones, merging onto the freeway. There was nowhere to stop. I told him if he didnt stop driving like a madman I was going to call the police, and he eased up a little. Eventually we got home and continued the fight in the car. I was repeating myself for the umpteenth time and he choked me to shut me up. It wasn't for very long but the weird thing was after he let go, I wasn't scared. I dont remember the context but I said something along the lines of "How im not some abuse victim". Like in my mind i had twisted things and convinced myself I wasn't in an abusive situation. That it was fine and justified. Looking back on it, I wonder if thats how people end up staying in abusive relationships. The mind is very weird.

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

Death is my biggest fear. Not so much the act of dying but the uncertainty of what happens next. My biggest uncommon fear would be monotony. I have wanted all my life to travel and not get stuck in the same place doing the same thing my whole life. Thats what I have seen my parents do, nothing. Work so hard and basically kill themselves for a house and food and nothing else. I have traveled to the states closest to me so at least I have that, but the fear of not doing anything else is still there. Also the thought of childbirth terrifies me. Lastly, I am not very close to my family and I fear the regret I will have if they die with our relationship how it is.

Do you fear death?

Yes, very much so.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

I have alot of vivid dreams and the occasional night terror. If night terrors count, then it would be one of those. I wake up in the middle of the night, paralyzed. Then this feeling of overwhelming dread and doom come over me, like nothing I have experienced before. Like something really, really bad is about to happen. I look out into the hallway which I can see from my bed, and see this freaky monster/demon/alien hand creep over the corner. Somehow I know that if I manage to move, it will go away. So i put all my might into moving and finally, I manage to move ever so slightly and simultaneously 'wake up". It doesn't sound that bad but to experience it is the most terrifying thing I have ever gone through. I no longer have my bed facing my door for this reason. But as for an actual nightmare, I had a dream I was killed. My boyfriend and I had been taken hostage or something, and were tied up on our knees. Each of us had someone holding a gun to our head. I watched as they shot my boyfriend dead, then they shot me dead. What happened next was me residing in my consciousness, thinking "so this is it, huh? well I had a good run I guess. I wonder what will happen next..." And then I woke up. After having that dream, I no longer feared death. Although, that was awhile ago, and I have returned to fearing death again.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

I used to fear death, then had a dream where I died. After that I didn't fear death for awhile, but I have gone back to fearing it.

I'm probably the best at keeping a level head out of all my friends whether it's from a bee buzzing around my head, to getting into near death experiences. As weird as it is I find comfort in situations where others around me are scared/panicking. I put it down to British stubbornness, seeing how silly everyone else looks panicking and not wanting to look like that. Plus someones gotta keep a level head right?

I'm usually the diffuser in chaotic situations, I hate conflict and will avoid it whenever possible. I remember being at McDonalds after a party drunk with a group of friends, and some 30 year old decided to start insulting me because of my hair, started calling me a faggot and shit like that. My friends are very protective of me and their blood started boiling, tempers rose, arguments started escalating and they wanted to beat the shit out of this guy. Despite being the victim I told them to back off, to leave him alone and calm them down because I didn't want to end a good night on a low with them being arrested. I just wanted some nuggets.

I'll usually shut down someone who wants to argue with niceness and try to keep it peaceful. Most of the time their reasons to try argue with me are silly, and they're just looking for a fight because someone else has made them angry or they've had a shit day, so I wont give them the reason they're looking for to argue. My drama days are well over with, I'm too mature to get involved in petty shit. If I had a grudge with you before it's water under the bridge  ^_^

Am I afraid of death? No. When you start riding motorbikes there's like an invisible contract you sign with yourself that whatever happens, happens. I've had so many near death experiences on the bike alone that it's normal for me to just pick myself up, pick the bike up, make sure it's still working fine, dust myself off then carry on. Most people would fucking rage at the other driver, but i'll just stay calm and brush it off. The other drivers are always a lot more terrified, I don't care what injuries I might have picked up there's an older lady coming over to me shaking, panicking over what she's done. I'm just telling her not to worry about it and calm her down because I'm scared she's about to have a heart attack :p

I remember having a conversation with one of my close friends down the pub about riding, and his views were that if he crashes and ends up dead then that's more than fine with him, because he died doing what he loves the most. "And you can bet i'll have the biggest smile on my face all the way to the end, because i'd rather die doing what I enjoy the most. I'd rather die young doing what I love, than of old age working some boring 9-5 desk job every day". That was also one of the last conversations I had with him because a couple days later on a ride out he lost control of his bike and crashed into a tree. So that conversation haunts me to this day but it's something I hold close to my heart. It's also why i've mellowed out a lot, because life's too short to hold grudges, to hold anger and hate  ^_^

I'm not sharing anything here that is too personal for me to post. But I'll give it a shot.

I think I would remain calm in the sense that I would quietly panic. I don't think I would start screaming bloody murder, but I would be freaking out quietly in my head.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

I was in one once as a child but I wasn't injured at all. Other than that, no car accidents. I didn't take any action. I can barely remember it.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Yes, my partner and I witnessed a hit and run car crash just a few months ago. I immediately ran full speed ahead to the car and he was right behind me. He pulled the guy out of the smoking car (he has first aid and whatever else) and was trying to help him while I phoned 911. It was the middle of the night so there weren't too many people around. We definitely helped all we could. It sounds a lot more dramatic than it actually was, btw.  :p

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

UHH, YEAH. I was on a roller coaster with my brother once and as it was going up it made the most loud, awful, abnormal grinding sound. I turned to my brother and whispered 'this is the end of our lives'.

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

One time I was out with my bestfriend and I was around 16. We were walking down the street at about 10pm and this guy pulls up his car a bit ahead of us. We keep walking towards him as he gets out of the car and walks over to the trunk. When we're passing by him, he pops the trunk, looks us dead in the eye and says 'get in the fucking trunk'.

SOO my friend and I looked at eachother and without saying a word we just booked it in different directions and basically ran for our lives. We were both fine. We never reported to the police.

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

No.

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

My biggest fear is ending up old and single. My second biggest is becoming unattractive with age. My third biggest is being squished to death.

Do you fear death?

No. I fear the painful dying part, but not the being dead part.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

I can't recall.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

I don't have any impressive fear that I've ever overcome. The only thing that comes to mind was that I used to be really scared to talk to random people online (not here lol). But I'm not anymore, and now I have a decent amount of online friends to play with.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

Yes. No. Yes.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Yah. Nah. Drove on by. Yup. Nope. They were already dead so there's that to consider.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

Yes. Yes to that too.

Yes. Student loans and loneliness. Her name was Sallie Mae. Yes. Yes. Practically. A rape on the intellectual's endeavors to better the world.

*points to head* You need to be loved to be put into a life-threatening situation.

Me staying the same for eternity. Any form of change, no matter how insignificant, to my daily life. People who believe in themselves. Nyctophobia. I've accepted myself as a failure and that made attempting in life infinitely less daunting. Nah, I'm good being mediocre. Been there, done that. Will be there, soon to be that. Dying last means coming to terms that you miss the people who died first and ain't nobody got time to be emotionally healthy and self-reflective.

Do you fear death?

I embrace it. I fear death if only mine is interpreted as suicide because that would make me look like a weak ass pussy.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

I couldn't say goodbye to a good friend.

What fear have you overcome? What happened?

Atychiphobia. I got over it.

Am I a tad morbid? Yes, sorry.

You could have turned out worse.

I lost everything in my entire life, except my car, due to a fire on July 4, 2007. My bf at the time, and I had just came back from Michigan to celebrate 4th of July by ourselves, his family was upsetting him, and we came back literally as the fire was taking down our apartment building. Fire trucks were there already. I was literally watching everything in my apartment burn in flames. I just stood there watching. I didn't freak out but I think that's because I just couldn't believe what I was seeing. American Red Cross was there and they had us filling out papers and gave us money to help us out for a week stay at a hotel and our landlord asked us if we wanted to move into a vacant apartment there or break the lease with no cost to us. I mean, I was able to make that decision that night minutes after witnessing my apartment go up in flames. I ended up breaking my lease and finding somewhere else to live. I was cool and calm throughout the whole process. I think I was mostly mesmerized by the fire/flames I was watching because before that day and still to this day, fire puts me in a trance.

My first time being pregnant, the baby was attacking my body and I got really sick. I lost so much weight so fast, I couldn't eat, I couldn't stand, I couldn't shower, I couldn't sleep. I had to quit my job, and eventually went to the hospital where they told me to make a decision. Either continue with the pregnancy and risk both of our lives, or end the pregnancy to save my life. I remember the day so vividly, I was so weak and sick, it was hard to even talk to get my answer out. I couldn't afford the medication needed to try and save both of our lives so I made the hardest decision of my life. However, this pregnancy was a product of rape that also took my virginity.

July 2009 I was in a car accident. My bf was driving. He has anxiety attacks where sometimes he checks out. Well, he had worked a 10 hour shift without a break. This was his original day off but when he came in to pick up his check, they asked him to work for someone who called off. Of course he did because money! Well on our way home, traffic was backed up and the car in front of him slammed on their breaks. He slammed on his, or so he thought. He actually hit the acceleration pedal and we hit a stopped car at 50mph. Fast forward to the hospital, we both went. He had bruising and a fractured rib. This is where I found out I was pregnant (again, 2nd time) however, it came out like this: Doctor picks up my chart, asks me to confirm my name and read off a number on my wristband, and once I do he then says, "So, it says here you miscarried your baby so I wanted to make sure you didn't have any questions for me." At this point, I was blindsided because I had no idea I was even pregnant. No signs, no sypmtoms, and I was 19 weeks along they said. He was not very empathetic what so ever, and when he seen I could even speak and my confused look on my face, he simply says, "Well, I am going to go check on some other patients, if you need me, have the nurses page me" puts the clipboard back and walks out. My reaction was complete silence. I didn't even know how to take the news.

Do you fear death?

Nope, I believe in reincarnation so our souls never actually die.

kind of? nothing on the level of a plane hijacking, but i've been alone in the house during a robbery when i was a preteen, and i've been in several ambulance trips to hospitals for various reasons. i've been able to stay extremely calm in all situations, and have had people later comment on my nerves of steel/courage. i tend to be emotionally numb and can amplify that even more in chaotic situations, but when the adrenaline dies down sometimes the leftover anxiety can hit pretty hard!

note i do think if i was in one of the situations mentioned in the question i'd.. probably stay calm as usual but also be petrified on the inside.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

yes i was involved in a car accident, no i was not badly injured, the accident was not something that could have been avoided by 'quick action'. i did stay calm throughout the ordeal, moreso than many others, despite being a major victim myself.

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

sometimes i see people trip.. usually when i'm too far away to help, but if i'm close enough i always try to help them up/pick up anything they've dropped. i've also stepped in a few times to stop fights from breaking out. that's about all i can think of. i'm definitely not the type to suffer from bystander effect though.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

sure have

Have you ever been threatened? For what? By who? Did you comply? Were you able to get out? Was it a robbery? Rape?

yea! for things not worth mentioning. by family, police, teachers. i was able to avoid the burn with the latter two, not with the first one.

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

i wouldn't call it life-threatening, no

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

being forgotten, i think. dying without ever having mattered. on one hand a quiet existence is kind of comforting too, but on the other... i want to be remembered.

Do you fear death?

i think i fear the process of dying more than death itself.

What's the worst nightmare you can remember?

i have memory problems so no details, but i think it was something to do with me being possessed by a demon, and when i woke up i had sleep paralysis & kept hallucinating said demon in my room with me. it was the worst few minutes of my life bc i couldn't think logically and assume it was a dream, i was entirely convinced it was real.

Have you ever been in a (f.e. car) accident? Were you badly injured? Were you able to prevent an accident by quick action?

Yes to the first two. Except the problem with me is that I don't register that there is danger happening to me or around me for a very long time, so I act unaffected and proceed as normal. Which also means that I don't actually do anything to stop the accident because I didn't realize there was danger happening. I'm kinda 'dull' in that aspect, ahaha...

Have you witnessed an accident? Did/could you help out? What did you do? Or did you suffer from the bystander effect? Did you feel like you could or should've helped out more?

Yes several times, but I'm usually a bystander or just waiting around to see what I can personally help with. Most of the accidents I've witnessed, there were already a good handful of people trying to help and were on the scene, so I didn't really think I should barge in there and overwhelm the victim with more people unless I was specifically needed. In the accidents I did help out, it was usually helping calm down the victim and stop any bleeding and calling 911.

Have you been in a life-threatening situation? Perhaps something that wasn't life-threatening in retrospect but felt like your last moments at the time?

Ohhh yes definitely. I'm terribly careless and with the fact that I register danger very late, I end up doing a lot of stupid things and not realizing it until after. Though I've definitely learnt my lesson on not crossing during red lights, even if there's no cars around...

Were you put in a life-threatening situation because of a (former) loved one?

My ex threatened to kill me a lot and had my address and would tell me they would come to where I live and kill me themselves. Looking back on it now just feels kinda surreal. I'm just glad they're out of my life, lol.

What's your biggest fear? And the second biggest? The third? What's your biggest fear other than common fears like fear of heights or spiders? Disappointing your mentors, loved ones, family? Never achieving anything? Ending up in the gutter? Dying alone? Dying first or dying last?

I mostly am scared of failing and disappointing people. I just don't want people's perceptions of me to be negative, and I have a lot of anxiety and fear surrounding that. I'm also scared of crossing the street, and usually need someone with me to do so.

Do you fear death?

To some extent? I fear my loved ones dying more than I fear myself dying. They all mean so much to me that I'm terrified at the idea of never being able to see them again.

Thanks guys! Just wanted to drop by and say I really appreciate the responses. I've made some really interesting observation and made some excellent conclusions. My teachers were thrilled with my research result.

More entries are still definitely welcome, feel free to talk!
