Yupp, one of Neopets previous CEOs (the one from the company that the original founders sold to) was a Scientologist.

They no longer own Neopets though, having sold it to Viacom, which then offloaded it to JS. From what I remember.

More on this former CEO: http://electronics.h...com/neopet5.htm

I am deathly afraid of the people behind scientology (not scientology itself) after hearing Leah Remini talk about it.

There are pretty decent reasons why, from what I gather.  They have a long and well-known history for destroying/very serious attempts at destroying the reputations and sanities of those who even speak out against them and their excesses. Here's one, ordered by the founder himself, uncovered by the FBI:

The FBI got involved in the first place, because they also were planning, then executing, a massive conspiracy of wiretapping, infiltrating, and theft of documents in US governmental offices. In order to remove anything critical/incriminating about Scientology from government records: https://en.wikipedia...tion_Snow_White

That last link, by the way, led to convictions of many senior leaders, including Mary Hubbard, the founder's wife and second-in-command. This eventually paved the way for a coup that allowed the current leadership in after the founder soon died a few years later. A leadership that is no less controlling and vindictive mind you -- just less experienced with the "technology" that is the whole basis and foundation of Scientology itself. Since they forced out the original leaders and experts in said coup, in favour of cronies of David Miscavigne, the new and still current boss (you may know him as basically Tom Cruise's bff).

If you read the TNT Reddit AMA they go over the whole Scientology thing pretty thoroughly, explaining they only found out after it was sold.

I appreciate scientology being around for one reason, and one reason only. It shows just how much a farce 'all' religions really are....it's an ideal example of how and why a religion is created (money), annd how they become popular. First they attract only the most gullible people. Those people eventually create families and brainwash their children - who then go on to brainwash their children. The numbers continue to increase so they can further recruit and attract celebrities and more money. Which in turn attracts the superficial and people who think that celebs are gods. What scientology is now is the end result....people being used as tools for power and conquest - to make a few people extremely wealthy. It's funny to me that people say it's not a religion......like 1.) stupid, illogical storyline 2.) asks for money. Seems 100% like any other religion out there.

On an intellectual level I kind of admire old L. Ron for his genius in creating such a massive money making creature off the backs of the stupid. However, it truly is pure evil that innocent children are involved, and the people who go against them are attacked.  A lot of these followers are coerced into revealing information that they will be blackmailed for later if they leave. So, if you see a former scientologist being arrested for being a pedo or wife beater or something (and not being protected by the group)....look further into that story and you'll see that they are former members trying to escape. Scientology uses psychological manipulation of both non-members and members to isolate these people trying to get away.

His great grandson ( I think) has done a lot to call L. Ron  out for being an obvious fraud.

Neopets is so addictive that I feel certain some of those same techniques used to recruit members have been implemented into the site itself. Just one that comes to mind....the AC cup...why does it start during the time of year where one is most likely to be away from the computer? I don't think that was done without thought.

Have y'all seen Louis Theroux's scientology documentary? Came out pretty recently, it's an excellent watch.

Oh boy, my first real post and it's about religion... what a good sign!

I don't want to argue with you of course. I'm also not religious. But I don't feel it's fair to discard all religion as evil just because one in particular (Scientology) is more of a pyramid scheme than a genuine set of beliefs. Spirituality is a pretty important part of being a human.

Yeah, I was going to go with five thoughts but then I discovered a little trick (the other hand also has five fingers!)

No worries. I'm not super militant....sometimes...i dunno ....depends on who I hate that day really.   Sometimes if I feel like a fellow atheist is being a dick I pretend to be super religious.

I think we have a word difference here. Spirituality is not the same as organized religion in my eyes. I like people to use their brains and hearts...not what the pope or a piece of paper from like the ancient years of 2008 tells them to do.

If I recall correctly, this scientologist guy that worked for Neopets also said once that he puts scientology on everything he does, which inspired some theories back then.

I believe Scientology is more of a cult than a religion. Unless you're saying all religions are cults. The fact that you mentioned that they will use blackmail, slander and manipulation to isolate members shows the difference between a cult and a religion.

There is nothing wrong with being religious provided that is one's choice. However, I'm not entirely sure that blackmail, slander, and manipulation is the great litmus test for cult vs. religion.

I had talking vegtables telling me that I was evil and that I should always tell a church member my most private thoughts....that didn't come from scientology and it most certainly was brainwashing and emotional blackmail.  The tactics used to convert people is absolutely evil, at its core.

As, well, the catholic church is widely known for blackmailing and slandering victims - and it has been suggested that a lot of that went all the way back to the Vatican...so no it wasn't "one bad apple". And child trafficking is a huge and ongoing issue in churches...the movie "oranges and sunshine" is a great example of the church being complacent in child kidnapping and trafficking as far up as 1970. To this day there are priests being protected and kept from jail. In fact, most of them were moved to remote areas (american indian areas) and given an all-you-can-abuse child buffet.

Churches throughout human history have been forces of corruption. You can't just look at modern times, it goes all the way back to when they actually had power. They tortured, blackmailed and poisoned people.

Sorry for the rant, but it just irks me when people laugh at scientology.....like, you realize they haven't (yet) done the type of damage that other religions have..

Not saying that anything is a cult. I'm saying that scientology is as real a religion as any of the others out there.

Scientology is horrific, as is any cult. Brainwashed people are scary, but the puppet masters are usually pure evil.

This really hurts my heart. I wish I could get a refund :( And get back all the years of my life I spent on that site.

I need to see this. She's been incredibly brave to get out and speak about it. It's too bad she got dragged into it as a child.

I think Neocash had something to do with scientology, right? To get people sucked in and addicted so that they kept throwing money at them. I don't think that's exclusively a scientology principle (if it was one and I'm recalling that right), since p2p is designed to take advantage of our desires.

^ The show with leah remini is excellent...she goes into how she was brought into it as a child and interviews some of the ex-members who were former high ranking members. They actually go into great detail about what happens when you leave and the tactics the group uses (using lower level members as tools, having them plant cameras in bird feeders, isolating family members from each other via "suppressive people" titles).

How certain members have just disappeared....like the wife of david miscaviage. She started going against the church and then suddenly went missing...and hasn't been seen in public since mid 2000s.

They even discuss how the LA PD (or some other california PD group) had a scientology member posted on their headquarters wall, which intimidated members who may have wanted to press charges. Very scary stuff.
